Galaxy S8 reminds you to clean the camera lens every now and then

The Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus, which were announced yesterday, are both great devices. However, they do have their flaws like most smartphones, with one of them being the fingerprint scanner that is strangely positioned next to the camera, instead of below it.

This means that the camera lens can easily get smudged, as it is so close to the fingerprint scanner. Samsung is apparently aware of this potential problem and has come up with a solution that might make life just a little bit easier for some. When you open it, the camera app of the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus will remind you to clean the lens.

Yes, that's right. Once you set up the fingerprint authentication, a note will pop up in the camera app saying "A clean lens makes for better shots. Clean your camera lens to keep taking better pictures." The note will appear the first time you launch the camera, and will probably show up randomly every now and then to remind you to keep the lens clean. You won't see it every time you open the camera app, which is a good thing, as that would really be annoying.

It's a small feature, but a useful one, and we're sure a lot of users will like it. As already mentioned, the note won't always pop up, so it shouldn't really bother those who don't find it valuable. But if Samsung was aware enough of the awkward scanner placement to add a reminder, why put the finger scanner so close to the camera lens in the first place?

Your Galaxy S8 will remind you to clean finger grease off its camera lens

Once you add a fingerprint, your GS8 will warn you to de-gunk your lens regularly.

The Galaxy S8's fingerprint sensor location has been one of the more controversial elements of the phone's design, with concerns being raised over reachability, and the potential for fingerprint smudges to accumulate around that rear camera lens. And it appears Samsung, too, is aware of the potential for picture-smudging grease to build up back there.

Once you set up fingerprint authentication — but not before you take this step — the GS8's camera app will tell you to regularly clean your lens at launch, via a pop-up message.

In our brief time with the Galaxy S8 at the launch event today, we were only able to get the message to appear once, the first time you start the camera app after first setting up a fingerprint. Nevertheless, the fact that it's there at all is revealing, showing Samsung is aware of potential side-effects of relocating the fingerprint scanner so close to the lens.

We don't yet know how big of an issue lens cleaning will be in the GS8, but if you plan on picking one up, it's worth heeding Samsung's advice.

Got camera? Facebook adds more Snapchat-like features

Facebook is adding more Snapchat-like features to its app. The company says it wants to let people's cameras "do the talking" as more people are posting photos and videos instead of blocks of text.

With the update coming to users starting Tuesday, Facebook is adding a camera icon to the top left corner of its mobile app. Users can tap it to open their phone's camera to do a photo or video post. Users could post photos from the app before, it just took two taps.

Facebook's other new Snapchat-copycat features are filters and animations that can be added to images, and a "stories" feature that lets users post photos and videos that stay live for 24 hours.

Snapchat pioneered the camera-first sharing and is wildly popular with younger users.

Apple just made a deal that could reinvent the App Store for a new generation

If you want your Apple (AAPL) iPhone to do something new, you usually just head to the App Store and find a pre-made tool get it done. When smartphones came out, that was all you needed — an app for that.

Today you might view a photo attached to a text on your Apple Watch, drag and drop individual files between iCloud folders on your phone, download them to PhotoShop on your Mac to manipulate and recombine them, and re-upload the final versions to the cloud. Life today, in short, is more complicated.

What if you want one app to do something to another app? Say, call an Uber every time you order Seamless for pick-up? Or what if you want one device to do something to another one — like having photos from certain iPhone camera roll folders automatically download to your Mac?

That gets messy. There are few ready-made solutions that meet the Steve Jobs criteria of "three clicks or less."

Now, Apple is getting back to those roots, said John Feland of consumer experience analytics firm ‎Argus Insights.

The App Store took a novel interface — mobile — and simplified the portal connecting phones to the internet. Apple's newest acquisition, Workflow, has the potential to do the same thing on a higher level for the smart home, particularly for voice, by simplifying the way we connect our devices to each other, Feland said.

Workflow is an app that allows you to automate certain actions. ( Here's a guide to how it works .) TechCrunch first reported Apple's takeover of the app, which Apple said had "outstanding use of iOS accessibility features, in particular an outstanding implementation for VoiceOver with clearly labeled items, thoughtful hints, and drag/drop announcements, making the app usable and quickly accessible to those who are blind or low-vision."

Apple is tight-lipped, so it's hard to know exactly what the engineers in Cupertino will come up with — Workflow could easily fade into the background of other products. But Forrester analyst Frank Gillett said it's unusual for Apple to acknowledge an acquisition and keep an app on the market, suggesting Workflow might stick around.

The software menu for your life

Workflow is somewhat of a visual programming tool that's easier than writing an app but probably too wonkish for the average consumer. Gillett said Apple might get under the hood, making it easier for every iPhone user to make DIY programs.

But another theory is that a new generation of developers, or "prosumers," could create "workflows" that act as micro or mini apps, Feland said. The Workflow app would then become a menu or "store" where consumers could go and select sets of commands that were premade by others.

For instance, a Workflow "developer" could create a "Gone Fishing" workflow that automatically locks the doors, turns down the thermostat, and shuts off the lights for the weekend. You open the Workflow app, search for the one you need, and when it's time to head out, all you have to do is tell Siri, "I'm going fishing."

That's important, Feland said, as Siri has "languished" behind competitors like Amazon's Alexa and Google Home, who have a more open platform ripe for integration across devices and apps.

Apple has already opened the gate to these kinds of integrations. Siri opened to developers last year, and users can now do things like buy an iTunes movie on one device and continue watching it on another.

Workflow is also important as Apple tries to extend computing experiences beyond your phone, which is increasingly become the "digital hub" that Steve Jobs once envisioned when he dropped "Computer" from the company's name.

"Some of this is Apple shifting velocity," Feland said. "Apple is trying to almost make iOS the core operating system that people are using. They are shifting to much more of a model that's not performance, but it's about connectivity."

So just like creating playlists was a heavy burden for the small screen of the iPod in the early 2000s, complex tasks can be overwhelming on a pair of AirPods, a Watch or the augmented reality glasses Apple is rumored to be making.

The solution for the iPod was iTunes on a personal computer -- a spread-out interface with plenty of room to create playlists.

In a similar way, Workflow could automate processes that are repetitive or tedious to do on a small screen.

But it could also force developers — Apple's loyalists — to adapt to a new way of making technology.

"By owning the technology, they are telling developers, this is going to be important so you should support it," Gillett said.

An Automator for the iPhone

The Workflow acquisition comes after Apple lost Mac automation expert Sal Soghoian in October, a departure that ruffled feathers in the software development community. Soghoian had been critical of using tools like app extensions to replicate the Automator function on Mac.

"Developers, but also people that are making music and content, were getting frustrated because they are being pushed into a less rich capability set," Feland said.

But Apple is already grooming the next generation of developers — seeding its new iPads with children's games to learn Apple's newest programming language, Swift. Importantly, these games work on touch screens, not Macs.

Tech commentator Jan Dawson notes that Workflow is a "much more user friendly approach to automation than Automator, and what I'd hope we'll see here is that same approach applied to built-in automation across Apple's product lines including the Mac."

Workflow could even create a deeper platform that enables hard-core Apple users to do more serious work from their connected devices. Consider Final Cut Pro — a "pro-sumer" software product that was eventually adopted by serious media professionals.

Still, Gillett thinks it's "ridiculous" to think we're anywhere close to an "iPhone Pro" replacing Macs at design schools. He said he thinks there may be more powerful MacBooks and desktop Macs in the pipeline for developers.

"What I think is true is they misjudged emotions of their developers who were disappointed with the latest MacBook Pros," Gillett said. "I don't think there's anyway to make a phone to do development work."

How to Install Third-Party Apps as System Apps on Android

There are two different types of Android apps: system apps and third Party apps. System apps are the ones that responsible for the core functionality of the Android System. Apps such as Dialer, Messages, Settings, Camera, Google Play Store. These apps come pre-installed with the phone out of the box when you buy it. Manufacturers do not provide an option to remove these apps as doing so might impact the core functioning of the system. And then there are third-party apps; the apps that you download from Play Store or sideload with an APK file. Apps such as Amazon, Splitwise, MX Player, etc. These apps can be uninstalled anytime without any restrictions. Also, system apps tend to have more permissions and hence more control over the phone than the normal third-party apps. In this post, I will tell you how to install third-party apps as system apps on Android.

Why convert Third-Party apps into System apps?

That's a good question, and I'll tell you why.

There are times when you might need to format (factory reset) your device to get rid of an annoying problem in your device (Weird errors pop-up every now then and won't go away, it happens!) or if your device is not working the way, it's supposed to. The problem with the factory reset it that it deletes all the user data and Third party apps. Your favorite music player you installed from Play Store, gone. That nice file manager you installed from Play Store, gone. If you convert these Third party apps into system apps, they'd still be there even after the reset, yay!

Prerequisites:

A Rooted Android Phone.

A File Manager of your choice that allows you to access/modify root files.

Install Third-Party Apps as System Apps on Android:

Step 1: We are going to use 'ES File Explorer.' It is free, and you can grab it from the Google Play Store by clicking below:

Note: If you're willing to shell out a few bucks, I highly recommend using 'Root Explorer' (download link below). But as it is a paid app, 'ES File Explorer' is used in this tutorial.

Step 2: Once you install  'ES File Explorer', open then app. Swipe from the left and tap on the 'Root Explorer' option to enable it. You will be prompted to grant superuser (root) permissions for the app, tap 'Allow.'

Step 3: Go back to the app's home page and tap on the 'Internal Storage' option and then tap on the '/' on the top left corner to go to the root directory where the system files are present.

Step 4: Once you are inside the "/" folder which is the root folder of your device, open the 'data' folder and then the "app" folder to access the data of all the user installed apps. Every app's data will be in its own separate folder. Now, long press on the folder of the app that you want to convert as a system app and select the "cut" option.

For the purpose of this tutorial, we will make use of the Facebook Lite app. The data of this app will be stored in the folder named 'com.facebook.lite-1'. 

Step 5: Go back to the root ('/') folder again and navigate to the 'system' folder and then to the 'app' folder. This is the place where the data of all the system app are stored. Paste the folder ('com.facebook.lite-1') we copied here. 

Step 6: The next step is to set proper permissions for the folder you just copied to make sure it has all the permissions of a system app. For that,

Step 7: Inside the folder you just copied, there is an APK file which is the actual app. You need to configure permission of this APK file too, to make sure it has all the permissions of a system app. To do this, open the folder you just copied, find the APK file and open its properties. Then set the permissions as shown below: 

Once you have completed the steps as mentioned above, simply reboot your device for the changes to take effect. This step is a must! Upon reboot, you will find that the app will be installed as a system app. To confirm this, go to Settings > Apps > Facebook Lite (in this example) to open the app's details. The screen should look like this now: 

If you notice, the uninstall option will not be present for this app now. You can either choose to disable or force stop the app, just like the apps that came pre-installed on your device.

OPPO launches F3 Plus with dual selfie cameras

Chinese smartphone maker OPPO has launched its latest upper mid-range model, the F3 Plus, and while the new device unfortunately doesn't come with OPPO's recently displayed 5x zoom camera unit, it does offer an unusual imaging feature: a dual-front camera.

The front unit features a 16MP main camera with 1/3" sensor and F2.0 aperture for standard selfies. It is accompanied by an 8MP module with 1/4" sensor and a super-wide-angle lens with 120 degree angle of view for group selfies. Thanks to built-in facial recognition, the camera app can notify users to switch to the wide angle camera if there are more than three people in the frame.

The rear camera is more conventional but offers capable-looking specifications. A 16MP 1/2.8" Sony IMX398 sensor is paired with a fast F1.7 aperture and optical image stabilization. Dual PDAF doubles the 'focus pixels' on the image sensor for up to 40% faster focus times in low light. 

In the processor department you'll find Qualcomm's Snapdragon 653 octa-core offering, backed by 4GB RAM and 64GB of internal storage. A dual-slot card tray can hold two Nano SIM cards or one Nano SIM card and a microSD card, expanding memory to up to 256GB. OPPO claims the beefy 4,000 mAh battery allows for a standby time of more than 284 hours. It also features the company's own VOOC fast charging technology which can get you up to 2 hours of talk time with 5 minutes of charging.

At the front you'll find a 6" 1080p IPS LCD display that is covered by 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass 5. The F3 Plus features a metal unibody and comes in black or gold. It will be available from April 1st in a number of Asian regions. No information on pricing or global availability has been released yet.

The paid Pro mode includes offline translation, website translation, verb conjugations, and voice translation - though for the latter, you might consider iTranslate's dedicated voice translation app on the next slide.

Yi Home Camera Review: a great budget security camera

Every home should have a security camera even if it's just for peace of mind. There's no shortage of options on the market, and just about every budget range is covered. The lower one goes on the budget scale, though, the higher one's odds of picking up a low-quality, inferior product. Such concerns have been expressed about Chinese company Yi's wireless Home Camera, but are those concerns valid? Read our review to find out!

Camera

The Yi Home Camera is shipped in a small, compact box with attractive and succinct packaging. Upon removing it from the box, the camera feels slightly cheap to the touch (due to thin, lightweight plastic), but doesn't appear cheap visually. The base to which the camera is permanently affixed is dense and heavy with a non-slip rubber gasket on the bottom. Though my particular camera is white with a black center piece (the camera itself versus the housing), Yi also offers an all-black model.

Though the camera sits flat on a surface, the camera component itself can be rotated without the housing to change the angle of the picture. The housing, meanwhile, is attached to the base with a plastic (but sturdy) hinge that can be adjusted so that the camera is facing fully upward or downward or any angle between the two.

The back of the camera module, meanwhile, features a speaker through which the owner can talk with someone nearby. There's also a discreet microSD card slot for saving physical copies of photos and videos. The physical attributes are rounded out by a (very bright) blue LED light on the front of the camera. This light is starkly apparent in full daylight and especially at night; it can be turned off using the app if you're wanting the camera for stealthy recording sessions.

The included power cable, meanwhile, is several feet in length, a welcomed change over the typically short cords many competing companies include with their indoor camera models. The cord is an ordinary micro USB offering that connects to a standard USB wall plug — any Android phone charger will work.

App

The Yi Home Camera is not my first security camera from China, and based on my past experiences, I expected this model to have a difficult setup process. That wasn't the case. Yi's camera was incredibly easy to set up, and the entire process took about three minutes. Voice prompts from the camera itself guided the process, which simply involved installing the app, entering the WiFi password, and then pointing the security camera at a QR code that appears in the app.

Once set up, the camera feed can be accessed over the Internet any time by tapping the camera listed within the app. Both standard definition (SD) and high-definition (HD) video quality options are presented. Users can control whether the camera's microphone is active, and can also speak through the camera's speaker by pressing and holding the app's microphone button. The camera's speaker is quite loud and more than capable of being heard in a room.

The camera itself captures wide-angle content, but when using the app normally (that is, holding your phone vertically), the visible camera footage is cropped to about a 4:3 ratio. To get around this viewing limitation, the app provides a sort of automatic panning feature that moves the on-screen footage toward the left or right when the phone is rotated.

As expected, the Yi Home Camera supports both continuous recording and motion-based recording, the latter of which means the camera will only record videos when it detects motion. The sensitivity of this motion detection is controllable in the camera's settings, with users being given a trio of options: low, medium, and high. An active monitoring zone can also be enabled, meaning you'll only get alerts if motion is detected in one particular area of the footage.

Finally, as far as recording features go, the camera has built-in IR lights for recording footage at night. These lights are enabled by default and will turn on when the camera's light sensor detects that it is dark. These lights can be disabled using the camera's app, however.

Unlike some cameras, such as the Funlux we reviewed in November, the Yi Home Camera includes a slot for a microSD card. With this card inserted (and formatted using the app's prompt), the app makes it possibly to quickly scrub through collected footage using a swiping motion across a timeline. If you don't want to use (or solely use) a microSD card, there's also an optional cloud subscription service.

That service offers a free 30-day trial, and offers 15-day loop recordings, 24/7 monitoring, remote access to the saved content through the app, and support for up to five cameras on an account. The service is priced at $14.99/month or $149/year, depending on whether you want monthly or yearly access.

Wrap-up

I have low expectations for $40 security cameras, and for good reason: many of them aren't very good. The setup process is usually sketchy and difficult, the apps are often buggy and crash frequently, and the network reliability can be less than stellar.

Thankfully, none of this is true for the Yi Home Camera. Despite the price, this security camera works exactly the way it is advertised to work, offering a mixture of fast setup, excellent video quality, reliable connectivity, and a fully functional mobile app. The robust array of features — active zones, sensitivity controls, etc — round out the device, and the included microSD slot is a welcomed deviation from typical indoor security cam designs.

So, Vivo again launched their new line up under selfie camera portfolio by launching Y66 in the market. Y66 is also a selfie centric phone with 16MP front facing camera with companies moonlight front flash in it.

The Device is priced at Rs. 14,999, which makes it cover under mid-range Android smartphone. They have differentiated the normal flash with 'Moonlight Glow' because it induces more natural glow compare to normal flash. In addition with 16MP front camera and a Moonlight flash, the device has a 13MP back camera with a normal LED flashlight. Vivo Y66 looks identical to the previously launched Vivo V5.

The device houses a 5.5-inch HD display with a 2.5D curve on it. The smartphone is made of of plastic and no metal is being used on it. Vivo Y66 is powered by an octa-core 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor which is paired with 3GB RAM and 32GB of inbuilt storage which can be expandable to up to 256Gb via Microsd card slot.

The device is packed with a 3000mAh battery in it. Vivo Y66 runs on Android 6.0 with the skin of FunTouch OS 3.0 which is updated from it previous version. The UI seems to be inspired and identical from iOS devices, but still the UI of the phone is quite smooth and while using it on short basis on lag was there.

Dual Camera Doov A11 Shows Up At TENAA

Doov aren't a brand that get much coverage outside of China, but the company has been going for a good few years now and continues to create popular devices for the local Chinese market.

Doov tend to create phones that look a little more stylish than other makes and models, and also tend to focus on camera features.

Over on TENAA a new Doov model has been given network approval and unsurprisingly this new model has a few camera features that are going impress potential buyers.

The Doov A11 is the first dual camera phone (as far as we can tell) the brand has launched. The rear of the phone comes with a central fingerprint scanner with two cameras, one on top of the other above. TENAA lists the rear cameras as a 13 and 8 megapixels.

Specs aren't super high on this phone with the 5.5-inch display getting just a 1280 x 720 resolution, but Doov will offer various options of the handset with RAM ranging from 1GB to 2GB and 3GB. Users will also have a choice of either 16GB or 32GB internal memory.

Other details we can see from the listing is support for micro SD cards, a 1.3Ghz chipset, 3020mAh battery and colour options including rose gold and champagne gold.

As with previous Doov phones, we don't expect to see this phone on sale outside of China, and even those of you planning to import the handset will have to figure out a way to install Apps on the YUNSO operating system.
