New iPhone camera app bets on pro-level controls, clever interface

Whether you're a skilled photographer or you're shooting just for fun, it always helps to have a great camera app loaded on your phone. One such app is Halide – a brand new and ambitious camera application for iOS.

According to the creators of the app, there are at least two elements that distinguish Halide from the remaining dozens of similar apps in the App Store. These are the specific gesture-based UI with tactile feedback and the design of the app itself. All the manual controls can be managed with simple gestures like swipes or taps, which makes the app easy … Comments

Amazon adds stickers to the camera in its iPhone app to try to sell you stuff

In a confusing addition to the Amazon app earlier this week, you can now add stickers to pictures taken using the bundled camera, as spotted by TechCrunch. Taken at face value, that sentence isn't inherently strange: after all, everyone wants their app to be the next big social networking thing, and stickers are just table stakes at this point. Basically every single messaging or photo app, from Instagram to iMessage to Facebook to (of course) Snapchat has stickers built it.

But this is the Amazon app. It is not a social networking or messaging app. It, from what I can tell, has no real aspirations to be those things. It is designed to sell you stuff. The camera feature, which was added in 2014, is only there to allow you to scan real-world items so that Amazon can sell them to you.

But even weirder, the stickers aren't just your usual bunch of cartoons and emoji. Rather, they're Amazon products — sticking a sticker on top of a picture also brings up a link to buy the product. Of course, that link only works in the Amazon app, and there's no way to preserve that data if you send it to someone. Plus, given that the Amazon app is primarily meant to sell you stuff, there's no real good mechanism to send it other than kicking it to the iOS Share Sheet and punting the still image to another app.

And while you might think that this is intended as some sort of vague attempt at augmented reality to let you see how those ninja-shaped salt and pepper shakers will fit on your mantle, the images are still obviously stickers, with a massive white borders, so it doesn't even work for that.

So, to recap: Amazon has added stickers to the Amazon app, allowing you to add images of Amazon products to pictures, with links to buy them that only you can see. The stickers seem to only be available on iOS for now.

LG G6 camera app ported to G5

The LG G6 comes with a dual 13 megapixel rear camera, including a 125-degree lens on the wide angle. With this the G6 can capture panoramic shots that the regular smartphones can't.

The G6, as LG claims, delivers a unique camera experience by creating a transition when zooming in and out between wide-angle and standard camera lenses during a 4K video capture. The wide-angle camera also reduces edge distortion, which in turn delivers more natural photos.

All these camera features of the G6 can now be accessed on the G5 smartphone. XDA developer xpirt managed to port the G6 camera app to the G5. But the apps will work only if your G5 is running on Fulmics ROM.

The G6 camera app will replace the stock camera app on the G5, but you will still have all the G5 camera features working. In addition, you will get manual video mode and working GIF encoder on your G5, with the port.

Installing the G6 camera app on G5 is quite easy. It can be done through recovery mode, if you have a custom version such as CWM or TWRP recovery on the G5 running on Fulmics ROM.

How to install LG G6 camera app on G5
  • Download the camera app from here or here
  • Copy it to the SD card of the LG G5
  • Switch off the G5 and then put it into recovery mode
  • In recovery mode, select install zip from SD card, then choose zip from SD card; locate the app and select it
  • Confirm installation
  • After the installation is complete the phone will reboot automatically
  • When the G5 boots up successfully, you can take advantage of the G6 camera app on your G5. Click here for our step-by-step guide to install ROM through custom recovery.

Mirrorless Camera Maniac: There’s An App For That

I made this picture just last night with my photo club. Nate brought his custom guitars out for us to photograph, and even posed with them for a minute. I made this picture, transferred it to my phone, then used Apple's Air Drop to transfer it to him right there.

Most mirrorless cameras include wifi and the ability to work with a smartphone app, and most mirrorless photographers I talk to aren't maximizing that connectivity and the included functions. The cameras themselves create the wifi, so you don't need to connect to wifi wherever you are. I highly recommend you get used to using your app and let it help you work better. Here are some of the things I do regularly with my Lumix cameras and the Panasonic Image App.

    Transfer Photos

Whether I'm sending pictures I just took of my kids to my wife or sharing pictures I just made with a client, I use this function daily. More and more, people want their pictures immediately and I find that sharing one during the shoot satiates the need for immediacy and gives me more time to finish the rest before sharing. It's waaaaaay better than taking a phone picture of the back of the camera.

The trick with my camera/app combo is that only JPEGs can be transferred. Fortunately, your camera can create a JPEG from any RAW file you've shot, and also allows you to put some finishing touches on the photo. I often use my camera's RAW processing tool to create a black and white JPEG of a photo and I share that with the client. This both trains my clients to like my black and whites, and it allows me to not be concerned with perfect color correction.

    Shooting Tethered

I don't know if all mirrorless camera apps have this function, but the Lumix cameras can shoot tethered to a computer. It's a little complicated to setup, but I've used it several times and it works well. The best thing is that you can set Lightroom to Auto Import (File menu) and as you shoot it will bring the pictures directly into Lightroom with presets applied if you like so that a client sitting with you sees exactly what the finished photo will look like. It's cool, and there are no cables to trip over. It's worth investigating to see if your camera has this option.

    Geo-Tagging and Time Sync

Because the app is connected to the phone, and the phone has GPS and synchronized world time, you can perfectly synchronize your cameras clocks and tag the photos with the GPS coordinates. That's very cool, and it doesn't require a costly external unit that devours battery life as most DSLR's do.

    Remote Control

The simplest thing you can do with your app is fire the shutter and control the exposure settings. You'll see a live view through your lens on the screen and you can make all kinds of adjustments from the phone. I use this regularly when shooting landscapes to save myself from lying in the dirt to look through the viewfinder, and especially when photographing stars. I can sit in the warmth of the car or tent while my camera works outside.

    What Else Can Yours Do?

If you're like most photographers, you're not maximizing your camera's app. I use the Lumix system, so I'm most familiar with that app. What about your camera? What other functions do you use and recommend? Please weigh in with a comment and help others reading here maximize their camera apps.

Clips 101: How to Use Apple’s New Camera App

    how-to-use-clips-google.png

Marketers and readers agree -- videos and social media make up the next great frontier of content marketing and distribution.

The harder question to answer: How do we quickly and easily make those shareable videos our audiences want to see on social media?

    New Call-to-action

There are a lot of ways to create video content directly within social media apps. Think: Facebook Live, Periscope, and Snapchat Stories. But these videos are live, spontaneous, and unpolished. They're authentic -- but sometimes, you might want to create something more technical and creative.

Here's where Clips comes in -- Apple's solution to easy social media visual content creation. Read on to learn all about the app, what you can do with it, and how to use it.

    What is Clips?

Clips is a mobile photo and video editing app that helps users quickly and easily create shareable visual content for social media and its Messages app.

Its simple interface features a record/capture button, filters, emojis and geotags, and cards. If these features sound familiar, it's because Clips borrows some of the most popular and engaging features from apps like Snapchat, Instagram, and Facebook.

But Apple isn't trying to create another photo and video sharing app that would inevitably compete with these other platforms. Instead, it's created one to easily film, edit, and upload visual content to apps like Snapchat, Instagram, and Facebook.

Apple takes Clips a couple steps further with two other cool features: automatic subtitling and a widget to add music from Apple Music. Let's dive into how to use all of these neat video editing tools to make a highly shareable social media video.

    How to Use Clips

Download Clips free of charge in the iOS App Store. As the name of the parent company might suggest, Clips is currently only available on iOS devices.

    How to Record

When you open up Clips, you'll see a big, red recording button. You can toggle between photo and video recording, or you can select a photo or video already recorded on your device. Tap the red button to capture a photo, or hold down the red button to record a video.

    clips-step-1.png

You can record Clips up to 30 minutes in length at a time.

    How to Add Automatic Subtitles

Tap the bubble text icon on the top of your Clips camera view, and choose the font style the way you'd like your subtitles to appear.

    subtitles-clips.jpg

Then, when you start recording, Clips will automatically subtitle the words you're speaking. I had to record this video several times to get it right -- you have to speak very clearly and slower than usual into your device's microphone. Here's what a short Clip with automatic subtitles looks like:

    How to Add a Filter

Tap the triple Venn-diagram at the top of your Clips camera view and different filtering options will appear. Tap the one you like, then record your photo or video as normal.

    clips-filter.jpg

How to Add Emojis & Geotags

Tap the star icon at the top of your Clips camera view and choose a sticker to add to your photo or video. Here's what one looks like in action:

    How to Add a Card

Clips has a few options for static or moving images you can customize with your narration or music (more on that next). Tap the letter T at the top of your Clips camera view and select a card you want to use for your photo or video. Here's an example I chose to wish someone a happy birthday:

    How to Add Music

Clips gives you the ability to add music from your own library, or its library of stock soundtracks, by tapping the music note in the upper right-hand corner of the Clips camera view. Tap a track to download and select it for your Clip

    How to Share Clips

Tap the downward-pointing arrow in the upper-left hand corner of your Clips camera view to look at your work. From there, you can create a new video or share the Clips you've already created.

When you record several Clips in one sitting, they'll be woven together into one large recording when you go to share. To avoid this, tap the arrow after each recording to create a new video project altogether.

Next, tap the sharing icon in the lower right-hand corner to pull up the screen below:

From here, you can easily share your Clips via Messages, email, or you can save your Clips to your device.

    Where to Share Clips

In addition to the channels above, you can easily share Clips where they were designed to be shared -- on social media. If you tap the "More" ellipses, you can add other social networks to your sharing options, as shown below:

Clips is a fun, easy-to-use app that allows you to create highly shareable images and videos. By adding a few embellishments like subtitles, filters, and emojis, content is easier to consume and share on a variety of platforms -- without having to film and edit a video with professional equipment and software.

Have you tried creating video content using Clips yet? Share with us in the comments below.

EDITORIAL: School bus camera plan not about the children

    Published 3:15 p.m. ET May 17, 2017 | Updated 23 hours ago

After the deadly bus crash that killed five children in Tennessee, many are asking: Why aren't seat belts required on school buses? Video provided by Newsy Newslook

A camera sits mounted next to a school bus stop sign.(Photo: File photo)Buy Photo

New Jersey's latest attempt to stick it to motorists under the guise of supposed safety is up for an Assembly committee vote Thursday, this time dressed up in "protecting our children" garb.

The proposal to allow installation of school bus traffic cameras sounds wonderfully laudable on the surface. Who, after all, could argue with a system that has the potential to enhance the safety of our kids as they enter and exit school buses? Motorists who violate traffic rules near school buses certainly deserve to be punished, don't they? Even the tiniest of violations is too much; ignorance of the laws is no excuse, and our children are at stake.

That's the pitch behind this proposal, in which violators would receive tickets in the mail through an automated system disturbingly similar to the much-hated red-light cameras that tormented motorists until lawmakers wisely chose not to renew the program. In fact, one of the companies pushing for the bus cameras — Redflex Traffic Systems — was also part of the red-light camera fiasco, a reminder that these programs are most of all about money, not safety.

MORE: How's my driving? Report bad school bus driving

MORE: Three potential new laws on buses, reckless driving

MORE: Lakewood crash spurs complaint of drivers passing school buses

Remember what turned the red-light cameras into such a scourge. They would generate tickets for even the most meaningless of technical violations — a "rolling stop" at a right-on-red intersection on an empty highway, for example. Traffic lights themselves were sometimes improperly calibrated, providing shorter yellow caution lights than required given road and speed-limit conditions, artificially creating more violations. The cameras quickly became municipal cash cows, with at best mixed safety results.

The school bus cameras would in some respects be even worse. Some of the applicable rules are largely unknown to motorists. For instance, cars must stop at least 25 feet from a stopped school bus. Even drivers who know that rule can't instantly gauge that distance. Someone easing to a safe stop at 24 feet gets a ticket, while a speeder slamming on the brakes at 25 feet won't? Motorists can proceed past a stopped bus if traveling on the opposite side of a median, at no more than 10 miles per hour. They'll get a ticket at 11 mph? Penalties for violations would be increased as well, the better to turn big profits.

There's also no indication of unusual or heightened safety concerns around school buses in New Jersey that would prompt some type of enforcement reform. We recognize the loss of even one child's life to an accident is too much, but regardless of what government does it can't guarantee safety at all times. We could outlaw playground equipment on which children could be injured, perhaps fatally. Should we do that? There are countless steps we could take as a society to incrementally increase the physical safety of our children, and citizens in general. That doesn't by itself demand we take those steps.

Lawmakers should reject this plan. It's not about the children.

My favorite photo app lets me turn my camera roll into watercolor art in seconds

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

    IMG_6071.JPGBrandt Ranj

Instagram may be the most popular photo app in the world, but its filters can only change your pictures so much.

If you'd like to turn your latest scenic snapshot into something a little more artistic, I suggest trying Waterlogue.

The app's interface is simple: Tap the camera icon on the bottom left-hand corner of the screen, choose your photo, and let Waterlogue do the rest. In a few seconds you'll have a watercolor version of the original picture.

There are a few different watercolor styles to play around with, but I always stick with the default. You can also darken or brighten the finished photo manually if you want to get it just right.

Despite the simple creation process, the results are pretty amazing. I've included a handful of side-by-side comparisons so you'll know what to expect. Not every picture you take will translate well, but the ones that do will definitely stand out.

NoBlurFrontCamera disables the blurred camera effect in the FaceTime app

The FaceTime app on your iPhone exhibits a blurred silhouette of yourself via your device's front-facing camera any time you're in the app. It's an interesting aesthetic effect, but it's a waste of battery and a deterrent for camera-shy people.

A new free jailbreak tweak called NoBlurFrontCamera by CydiaGeek officially lets you disable this effect, replacing it with a simple dark background.

Because it disables camera activity in the FaceTime app, except for when you're in a video call, it'll be great for anyone who hates being on camera during simple actions like checking FaceTime call history.

Turning off the blurred camera effect also helps keep your device's battery from draining too quickly while you sift through your call history. While you probably don't spend a lot of time staring at the FaceTime app for no good reason, every bit of battery savings can be useful when you're taking several precautionary steps to conserve power.

NoBlurFrontCamera adds a preferences pane to the Settings app where you can toggle it on or off on demand:

You don't have to respring your device to save your changes, but you do have to force-quit and re-launch the FaceTime app from the App Switcher so your settings take effect.

Because NoBlurFrontCamera is mostly an aesthetic tweak, it won't be for everyone. On the other hand, if your device struggles to stay powered through the day and you think the battery savings could be worth it, then the tweak assumes a functional purpose as well that could be beneficial.

If you're interested in giving it a try, you can download it for free today from Cydia's BigBoss repository. The tweak works on jailbroken iOS 8, 9, and 10 devices.

Do you like the FaceTime app better with or without the blurred from camera effect? Share in the comments section below.

HTC publishes its Edge Sense app for the U 11 on the Play Store, then removes it

Last night, someone at HTC made a rather large mistake, and hit the "publish" button on the accompanying HTC Edge Sense application. The app listing gave us a quick look at how this new Edge Sense functionality will work with the new HTC U 11. Unfortunately, the listing was pulled shortly thereafter, but the folks at Android Police were able to get some of the included screenshots.

These included screenshots don't really explain the functionality of Edge Sense, but we wouldn't expect to see that in a listing. The first screenshot shows off a brief tutorial screen, which is designed to help the user to get acclimated to squeezing the sides of their phones.

From there, we just see an example of the camera app, with a viewfinder for both an image and a video. The final two screenshots show the highlighted edges for squeezing, with one screen showing Google Assistant and the second showing the Messages app.

What's interesting about the second screenshot is the fact that there seems to be 2 "Slots". This may be for an MMS and SMS combination, but we won't know for sure until the U 11 is officially unveiled.

Speaking of, HTC will be hopefully taking the world by storm on May 16th as the company looks to get the U 11 announced ahead of Google I/O 2017.

Smartphone camera shootout: LG G6 vs Samsung Galaxy S8

Last year, we named the Google Pixel the king of all smartphone cameras, besting the Samsung Galaxy S7, LG V20, and iPhone 7. Last month, the Pixel tried to defend its crown against the LG G6, and lost.

Now, a new contender tries to knock LG off the top spot. Samsung's Galaxy S8 may appear to have the same camera specs as last year's Galaxy S7, but don't let the megapixel numbers fool you: it's got a new sensor, new optics, and new image processing algorithms.

Can Samsung's latest and greatest knock LG off its perch? Let's find out.

What we're testing (and what we're not)

Before we begin, how about a quick specs recap? The main rear camera of the Galaxy S8 uses a Sony IMX333 sensor with dual pixel autofocus. The resolution is 12 megapixels (with 1.4 micron pixels) and it's all behind an f/1.7 lens. It's got optical image stabilization, too. The LG G6 has two rear cameras, one standard and one wide-angle. They both use the same Sony IMX258 sensor, at 13 megapixels with 1.12 micron pixels. For our tests, we're mostly concerned with the standard camera, which has optical image stabilization and a superior f/1.8 aperture. The wide-angle lens, for the record, lacks OIS and has an f/2.4 aperture.

Simply looking at the specs, Samsung has the upper hand. It should perform better in low light with a wider aperture and larger sensor, and should focus more quickly.

It's important to note that we tested these cameras the way most people use them, in auto mode. That means straight out of the pocket, using the stock app, with HDR set on auto. If a phone defaults to something less than full resolution, we rectify that, but otherwise this is the "out of box, out of pocket" experience.

We're going to look deeply at the cameras across three areas: color, clarity, and range. We took dozens of photos with each phone, and what you see here is just a representative sample.

It's important to note that this is not a comprehensive review of the entire camera experience. We're looking at final shot quality across three main areas, but there are many other factors that go into a great smartphone camera. The speed at which the camera app loads and is ready to take a photo (the "pocket to photo" time), shutter lag, shot-to-shot latency, burst speed, the camera app interface and features, and that's all without even diving into video features or quality, or the front camera.

    Color quality

When examining the color quality of the shots these phones produce, we're concerned with accuracy, vividness, and how well the camera balances color temperature.

It's a cloudy day at SFO, and while it's good to see the Galaxy S8 back off on the typical Samsung oversaturation, the image is far too blue. The G6 has far more accurate color temperature. This is a big stumble for Samsung—the color tint here is well beyond typical "viewer preference" white balance.

    g6 gs8 camera shootout gs8 airport Adam Patrick Murray/IDG

The Galaxy S8 isn't oversaturated, but the white balance is way off here.

    g6 gs8 camera shootout g6 airport Adam Patrick Murray/IDG

The G6, by comparison, delivers an accurate color balance.

This next shot is challenging. The light emitted from the table is a cool blue, while the ceiling lights are a warm yellow. LG gets it right, accurately capturing the stark contrast between them, not just on the tables but reflected on the black camera lenses. Samsung locks on the cool blue table and tries to compensate for it, turning it white and the background lighting positively orange.

    g6 gs8 camera shootout gs8 lenses Adam Patrick Murray/IDG

Samsung tries to correct for the blueish tint of the table light, and ruins the background.

    g6 gs8 camera shootout g6 lenses Adam Patrick Murray/IDG

LG accurately captures this complex lighting situation, with blueish table light and warmer environment lighting in the background.

Finally, let's look at this orange traffic cone in the grass. Yes, you might think the GS8's image is more pleasing, but it's really "greenifying" everything. The G6's colors may be more dull, but it's far more accurate. And if you zoom in and look closely at the grass you'll see a lot more variation in color.

    g6 gs8 camera shootout gs8 grass Adam Patrick Murray/IDG

Samsung's color's pop, but far too much. This grass isn't nearly this green in real life.

    g6 gs8 camera shootout g6 grass Adam Patrick Murray/IDG

The browns and yellows in the grass on LG's image aren't as pleasing, but reflect the true colors.

Samsung has long been criticized for taking too many liberties with color saturation and intensity, and while its image processing seems to have improved, it's still not nearly good enough. Too often, its colors simply don't reflect reality, or it has trouble nailing the white balance of a scene. Samsung needs to aim for accuracy in its auto modes, and leave this intense color stuff for its "creative" modes.

Winner: LG by a wide margin.

    Next, let's check out clarity.

Accuracy of smartphone apps for heart rate measurement

Mobile electronic devices such as smartphones or tablets are gaining increasing popularity worldwide. Recent estimates suggest 7.7 billion mobile broadband subscriptions in 2020, while the number of smartphone subscriptions is expected to equal about 70% of the world's population.1 The ubiquitous use of smartphones coupled with expanding mobile broadband connectivity could change the way healthcare is accessed, monitored and delivered ('mobile health technologies', mHealth). mHealth is defined by the practice of medicine supported by portable diagnostic devices.2 For healthcare systems, the importance of mHealth strategies has been demonstrated as they may play an important role in the control of epidemic disease such as cholera3 or Ebola.4 On an individual patient level, mHealth technology can be used, for example, to increase medication adherence5,6 or control of blood glucose levels and insulin doses in patients with diabetes.7 For cardiac patients, a wide array of smartp hone-connected cardiac monitoring devices and health apps for the diagnosis and prevention of cardiovascular disease is available.8

Overall, it is estimated that the number of health-related wearable sensors will reach 80 million in 2017.9 To reach the transformative potential of mHealth, validation of the technical capabilities and accuracy as well as the clinical impact of these technologies is needed.10 As heart rate monitoring is an essential component of almost all clinical situations, in the present study we evaluated the usability and accuracy of four different heart rate measuring apps. The accuracy of the apps was compared to the electrocardiogram (ECG) and pulse oximeter-derived heart rate using medically approved professional devices.

    Basic principles

Photoplethysmography (PPG) is based on the principle that blood absorbs more light than the surrounding tissue. In addition, variations in blood volume (i.e. in systole and diastole) affect the transmission or reflectance of light.11 These two principles can be used to detect blood flow. The PPG technique is commercially used in pulse oximeters for the determination of arterial blood oxygen saturation (SaO2), achieved by computing the differences of light absorption in the red and infrared range by oxygenated and deoxygenated haemoglobin.12 In contrast, heart rate detection (but not SaO2 measurement) based on PPG is feasible using only light in the visible range.11

Two different concepts of measuring heart rate by PPG are known: contact and non-contact PPG. In contact PPG, the subject places a finger on the built-in camera of the phone. The camera is placed directly on the skin and the built-in flash provides the necessary light source in the visible range for reflection by blood cells (Figure 1(a)). In non-contact PPG, the camera is used in the classic way by holding the camera in front of the patient's face (up to 1.5 m away) without the need for direct skin contact (Figure 1(b)). There is no need for a dedicated light source, ambient light is sufficient.

    figure

Figure 1. Two different concepts of measuring heart rate by PPG are know: In contact PPG, the subject places a finger on the built-in camera of the phone directly on the skin and the built in flash provides the necessary light source in the visible range for reflection by blood cells (Figure 1a). In non-contact PPG, the camera is used in the classical way by holding the camera in front of the patients face without the need for direct skin contact (Figure 1b). (a) Contact photoplethysmography; (b) non-contact photoplethysmography.

    Technology

    Applications (apps)

Overall, four commercially available apps have been tested (downloaded from iTunes store). For contact PPG, we used 'Instant Heart Rate' (IHR) (version 3.0.1; Azumio Inc., USA) and 'Heart Fitness' (HF) (version 2.0.3; Senscare SAS, France). For non-contact PPG, we tested 'Whats My Heart Rate' (WMH) (version 2.0; Vitrox Technologies, Malaysia) and 'Cardiio' (CAR) (version 2.0; Cardiio Inc., USA).

    Mobile devices

We tested the four different apps on two different portable phones (iPhone 4, iPhone 5). The exact camera specifications of the phones are shown in Table 1. The primary camera was used for the contact PPG-based measurements, while the secondary camera was used for all non-contact measurements.

    Table

    Table 1. Camera specifications.

    Table 1. Camera specifications.

    Study population

From April to December 2013 we randomly included adult patients requiring heart rate monitoring on the chest pain unit or the emergency room of the University Hospital Zurich, Switzerland. All patients willing to participate in the study were eligible; however, patients in critical medical conditions were excluded from this study. Patients participating in this study gave written informed consent. The study was approved by the ethics committee of the Canton of Zurich, Switzerland (KEK-ZH-NR: 2012-0524).

After recruitment, initial heart rate and rhythm was measured using a 12-lead ECG (Schiller AT-104 PC/SDS 101 and Schiller AT 102 Plus; Schiller AG, Baar, Switzerland). Heart rate was then measured simultaneously by pulse oximetry (Draeger Infinity Delta XL; Draegerwerk AG & Co. KG, Luebeck, Germany), an ECG-based monitor (Philips Intellivue X2; Koninklijke Philips NV, Amsterdam, the Netherlands) and by each app. The patient history was taken from medical records, and additional clinical characteristics were collected (age, body temperature, blood pressure and blood oxygen saturation). The graphic conceived by Jubran13 was used for grading of the pulse oximetry curve quality.

    Statistics

Continuous data are expressed as medians and interquartile ranges (IQRs) or as mean ± standard deviation (SD) as appropriate, and categorical data as number and percentage (%). Categorical data were analysed using the chi-square test. To compare the values provided by the four apps to the ECG and oximeter-derived heart rate we used Pearson's correlation and Bland–Altman analysis. To assess the level of agreement between methods we computed the mean absolute error.14 Linear and multiple regression analyses were performed to test the influence of the defined factors on the mean absolute error of the four different apps. A P value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Statistical analyses were performed using Stata SE, version 13.

    Clinical characteristics

We included a total of 108 patients. In total, 432 datasets (each consisting of an app-based measurement, a simultaneous ECG-based measurement and simultaneous pulseoxymetry-based measurement for each patient) were obtained. Nineteen datasets were excluded due to missing values (due to either the app-based measurement or ECG being unable to give a value). Median patient age was 65 years (range 19–99 years, IQR 52–76 years); 31% of patients were women. During the measurements, median systolic blood pressure was 126 mmHg (range 76–189 mmHg, IQR 112–142 mmHg), body temperature ranged from 35.0℃ to 37.5℃ (median 36.0℃). Median arterial oxygen saturation measured by pulse oximetry was 96% (range 62–100%, IQR 94–98%). Sinus rhythm was present in 85 patients (79%), atrial fibrillation in 11 patients (10%), ventricular pacemaker stimulation in five patients (5%) and atrial tachycardia/third-degree AV-block/junctional escape rhythm each in one patient (1%). The base line characteristics of the study population are given in Table 2. In a total of 413 measurements by ECG we recorded a wide heart rate range from 31 to 124 bpm (median 75 bpm, IQR 62–90 bpm). The quality of the oximetry pulse curve was judged to be satisfactory in 86% (IHH measurements), 96% (HF measurements), 80% (WMH measurements) and 69% (CAR measurements) of the cases.

ECG measurements compared to pulse oximetry measurements with approved medical devices

ECG-based measurements compared to heart rate measurement using the pulse oximetry device showed a very high level of agreement (Figure 2, Table 3). Pearson correlation r between the ECG determined heart rate and the oximetric heart rate was 0.92 (P < 0.001), showing a mean absolute error of 2 ± 0.35 bpm.

Table 3. Comparison of heart rate assessed by the four different apps and medically approved pulse oximetry compared to electrocardiogram.

Table 3. Comparison of heart rate assessed by the four different apps and medically approved pulse oximetry compared to electrocardiogram.

ECG measurements compared to app-based measurements

The accuracy of heart rate measured by apps as compared to ECG, reported as mean absolute error (in bpm ± standard error) was 4.5 ± 1.1 (IHR), 2.0 ± 0.5 (HF), 7.1 ± 1.4 (WMH) and 8.1 ± 1.4 (CAR). The ECG-derived heart rate correlated well with IHR (r = 0.83) and HF (r = 0.96), but less with WMH (r = 0.62) and CAR (r = 0.60) (see Table 3). The Bland–Altman plots (Figure 3) show considerable differences between the tested apps. Non-contact PPG measurements performed significantly worse compared to fingertip-based (contact) measurements. Both non-contact PPG-based apps performed significantly worse at higher heart rates. They also have a tendency to underestimate higher heart rates.

    figure

Figure 3. The Bland-Altman plots show considerable differences between the tested apps. Non-contact PPG measurements performed significantly worse compared to contact measurements. Both non-contact PPG based apps performed significantly worse at higher heart rates. They also have a tendency to underestimate higher heart rates. (a) Contact photoplethysmography; (b) non-contact photoplethysmography.

    Influencing factors in app-based measurements

Using multiple regression analyses, we were unable to demonstrate any relationship between influencing factors and mean absolute error for the contact PPG apps IHR and HF (Table 4). However, the two non-contact PPG apps performed worse, with declining body temperature and increasing heart rate. Furthermore, camera technology tended to influence the performance of the non-contact PPG apps.

    Table

Table 4. Influencing factors in App-based measurements.

Table 4. Influencing factors in App-based measurements.

The widespread use of smartphones, expanding mobile broadband connectivity and the emergence of new mHealth technologies will result in an increase of collection (and transmission) of individualised health-related data. The potential to increase patient engagement, to reduce healthcare costs and to improve outcomes is remarkable. Nevertheless, establishing reliable and clinically meaningful digital health data is problematic: in the present study, the performance of different apps for heart rate measurements by smartphone (without any external connectable sensor device) was very heterogeneous. While one app (HF) measured heart rate with comparable accuracy to pulse oximetry, other apps did not perform as well. In some apps, absolute differences of over 20 bpm (or even more) occurred in more than 20% of all measurements (see Table 5). The precise reason for WMH and CAR performing slightly worse is unclear. Theoretically they should be performing similarly. We could not reliably ide ntify an influencing factor. The two non-contact PPG apps performed significantly worse compared to fingertip-based (contact PPG) apps. This may be to due to inferior camera technology (in both apps the front camera with less advanced specifications was used) as well as generally a more demanding measurement environment. Uncontrolled ambient light may make it more difficult to discriminate between two distinct peaks in the pulse wave. Furthermore, the accuracy of non-contact PPG apps was significantly worse at higher heart rates, which is in line with previously published data.15,16 In a different more recent study comparing the accuracy of wrist-worn heart rate monitors using contact PPG technology, no such effect was observed.16 One possible explanation for the worse accuracy of non-contact PPG could be the inferior resolution of the secondary camera. The trend to more reliable performance in next generation devices (iPhone5 vs. iPhone4) observed in the present study could prognos ticate better performance in the future using more advanced camera technology.

Table 5. App-performance grouped by differences (bpm) to ECG.

Table 5. App-performance grouped by differences (bpm) to ECG.

While some apps are developed using evidence-based guidelines and are continuously evaluated,17 most remain unevaluated. The sheer number of unregulated apps can lead to consumer confusion, reluctant promotion by healthcare providers and unnecessary consumption of healthcare resources. It is largely unclear how we should develop the resources necessary for administrating digital health services and the requirement for healthcare personnel to monitor the wave of incoming patient-generated data. Besides these logistic aspects, several other issues are problematic and need to be addressed (medico-legal liability, personal data safety, health insurance collaborations, reimbursement, incorporation in governmental healthcare systems/programmes, etc.).

Nevertheless, mHealth technologies potentially offer amazing opportunities for patients, healthcare providers, researchers and healthcare delivery systems. To identify the most effective and robust technologies for clinical use it is mandatory to create an evidence base that validates generated measurements and assesses the impact of specific mHealth products and concepts on healthcare quality, cost and outcomes.

We found substantial performance differences between the four studied heart rate measuring apps. The two contact PPG-based apps had higher feasibility and better accuracy for heart rate measurement than the two non-contact PPG-based apps. Careful analysis of app accuracy is warranted before using these apps in clinical practice.

TC, CT, CAW, AB, PB, JH and TFL contributed to the conception of the work. TC, CT, CAW, AB, AAT, FS and SM contributed to the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data for the work. TC, CAW and PB drafted the manuscript. All authors critically revised the manuscript, gave final approval and agree to be accountable for all aspects of work ensuring integrity and accuracy.
