eBay is adding image recognition to find items with your camera

Online marketplace eBay today unveiled two upcoming search options featuring images. Find It On eBay and Image Search are both coming this fall to the eBay app and mobile platform.

The new features take advantage of machine-learning to allow shoppers the use of images when searching for matching items.The first feature, Find It On eBay, designed to leverage social media advertising and the covetous nature of fashion aficionados takes advantage of the share feature in apps. This lets users share an image to the eBay app where it will then compile a list of related objects.

This is gonna save collectors a lot of time. I'll be able to search for the Nikes I want on Amazon, and then share the image to eBay where they price-match. What a world. What ever happened to eBay having auctions? Or Amazon just being a bookseller, for that matter.

Also new is "Image Search", which has a far less-impressive name, but seems pretty useful. The feature lets you take a picture, or select a photo from your device gallery, and conduct an eBay item search based on the image.

Both of these options are algorithm driven. AI uses deep learning and computer vision to determine the similarities between images and other objects and then it learns how to prioritize its findings for consumers. Since eBay has a finite number of offerings it follows that the neural network could actually be quite good. It won't be looking for a needle in a haystack.

The new features won't be available until fall, but we're already looking forward to seeing what AI can do for eBay image searches. Anything that makes shopping easier is a good thing.

Traditional point-and-shoot cameras are a fair bit less popular these days given the surge in smartphone usage, so the GoPro 'QuikStories' app aims to help users experience a more connected functionality.

The app works by having users utilize their GoPro HERO5 camera as they normally would and pair the device with their smartphone. The footage will be automatically copied to the app, which will then create a video using it that can then be utilized for sharing online with your friends to let them know what you've been up to.

The GoPro 'QuikStories' app helps to further implement a connected experience with the brand's camera in order to keep it as relevant as possible for avid photographers.

20+ photo apps every photographer should have on their phone

What is one thing almost every photographer has on their person every time they shoot? A smartphone. These ubiquitous devices may be viewed with some scorn by longtime photographers, but in addition to being able to capture impressive images, smartphones can act as fully-featured photography assistants that are capable of helping you capture the best possible shots with your dedicated camera. We wanted to make a list of must-have apps for all sorts of situations, from editing photos to performing in-depth location scouting and calculations in the field.

We have organized this article into five major sections: Capturing and Editing Photos, Apps for Outdoor Photographers, Must-Have Apps for Lighting, Hyperfocal Distance and Much More, Apps for Storing and Sharing Your Photos and Apps for Your Specific Camera, but there is crossover between some apps. For example, Flickr is great for scouting locations, storing photos and sharing your work. Instagram can capture and edit photos, but really shines as a social media platform. Capturing and Editing Photos

At least on iOS, the built-in camera app is fine, but not great. For photographers who want more control, a third-party app is a must-have iPhone app. Here are some awesome and free options for smartphone photographers.

Snapseed - Available for free on Android and iOS

 

VSCO - Available for free on Android and iOS

VSCO prides itself on their library of filters that mimic the "shot on film" look, and over the years have proven extremely successful at doing so. You can capture in RAW via their in-app camera tool, and their editing options are also excellent. The app and a few film looks are free to download, but VSCO offers more that you can purchase in-app.  

Camera+ - Available for free on iOS

Camera+ has long been my go-to camera app on my iPhone. It can easily capture RAW images and it has intuitive controls and a good user interface that offers photographers a lot of manual control over the camera.

Cortex Camera comparison

Cortex Camera - Available for $2.99 on Android and iOS

So Cortex Camera is not free, but it is cool, especially if you want to take low-light photos with your phone. The app combines multiple exposures to create a final image with less noise. A tripod is not explicitly necessary, but you will need to be able to keep your camera steady. It also offers long exposure image effects like motion blur.

SKRWT - Available on iOS for $1.99

Are you sick and tired of distortion in your iPhone photos? Enter SKRWT, which is an all-purpose perspective correction app. It is designed to work not only with photos captured by your phone, but imported images as well or shots captured using iPhone lens adapters.

TouchRetouch - Available for $1.99 on Android and iOS

TouchRetouch allows you to quickly and easily remove objects from photos such as telephone wires, signs, posts and even blemishes from skin. It's your one-stop shop for removing distracting elements from your images on your Android or iOS device.

Lightroom Mobile - Available for free on Android and iOS

Though the app is free to download and use, but you do need an active Adobe CC membership to take full advantage of the application. It's very powerful, bringing basically desktop-caliber photo editing to your pocket. Adobe actively updates both Android and iOS versions, so consider this an app that gets better all the time.

  Apps for Outdoor Photographers

For outdoor photographers, there are many indispensable apps you simply must have installed on your phone. From predicting weather to checking dark sky conditions or predicting the sun's location, there are a lot of apps that I personally use as a landscape photographer and many that location portrait shooters swear by.

A good weather app is a must-have

Above all else, if you are going to be shooting outside, you need to know the weather forecast. Of course, no weather forecast app will be 100 percent accurate. However, in my experience, AccuWeather (available for free on Android and iOS) has been as reliable as any, often accurately predicting hourly weather and cloud conditions in my area. Another popular one is Yr (Yr.no on iOS), which is available for free. This app is from Norway and offers detailed weather forecasts for 10 million locations around the world. If you place an emphasis on a clean user interface, give 1Weather a look, it's available on Android and iOS for free and includes data layers, radar maps, customizable alerts and more.

500px is great for finding inspiration and cool new locations to check out, especially if you're planning a trip to a popular locale.

For finding great locations to shoot, 500px is a solid option. The app is available for free on Android and iOS and can be used to search for photos captured in certain areas.

MapAPic Location Scout - Available in free and $4.99 versions on iOS

We tried this app recently and found it to be a useful way to store favorite photo locations on your phone and view useful information about them when planning additional trips.

Pashadelic - Available for free on Android and iOS

Pashadelic lets you plan a photo adventure while drawing inspiration from crowd-sourced photos from around the world. You can view sun and moon conditions for a selected location and view it in augmented reality to get a sense of when the perfect shot will take place.

Sky Guide - Available for $2.99 on iOS

I've long used Sky Guide to aid with my night photography. The app lets you view the location of stars and other celestial bodies in real-time and will let you know what you're looking at as you point your phone toward the sky. That's useful in the field, but what makes the app great for me is the ability to enter a date and time and scout ahead for the location of things such as the Milky Way and the moon and get an exact location for where they will rise and set and when that will occur.

Sky Guide on iOS lets you view useful information such as when and where the Milky Way center will rise on a selected date. The ability to see the angle of the Milky Way relative to your location is very useful too.

Sky Guide (different than the iOS app above) - Available for $2.99 on Android

Sky Guide for Android is made by a different developer that is unrelated to the iOS version, but it offers similar features for those who don't use an iPhone or iPad. It's not the "same" app, but it's still great and will do pretty much what the iOS version does. 

The Photographer's Ephemeris - Available for $4.99 on Android and $8.99 on iOS

Now I don't know why the app varies in pricing from Android to iOS, but I do know that it's worth every penny no matter your platform. For outdoor photographers, this is a must-have app. The Photographer's Ephemeris (TPE) does it all, it allows you to check the time and direction of the sun, moon and galactic center for customized locations, it lets you view the azimuth and altitude of the sun and moon, visualize the Milky Way, view topographic maps with sun and moon path overlays, move map pins, save locations, use autorotation with the compass in your phone and allows you to view useful data offline. It also has information for line of sight, crescent moon visibility, the golden hour, light pollution and elevation. You can even import and export from KML using the app. It does a lot and can frankly take the place of many of the apps listed in this section.

The Photographer's Ephemeris shows the trajectory of the sun and moon as they rise and set, which is very useful when planning shoots, even months in advance. As you can see in the screenshots above, the paths of celestial bodies can vary dramatically in even just a few months.

Dark Sky Finder - Available for $1.99 on iOS

Light pollution is a big problem for night sky photographers. If you want to view a detailed map showing you the levels of light pollution for locations around the world, Dark Sky Finder is a great app. There's also a similar Android app available for free called Light Pollution Map, which you can download here. 

Must-Have Apps for Lighting, Hyperfocal Distance and Much More Pocket Light Meter - Available for Android ($0.99) and iOS (free) 

Dedicated light meters may be very accurate, but they're also not cheap. You can have a pretty good light meter right in your pocket thanks to apps like Pocket Light Meter.

Sylights - Available for free on iOS

If you often shoot with lights, it can be tough to keep track of how you had your lights set up for a particular shoot, but that is great knowledge to have. We can't all be gifted sketch artists, but Sylights lets you make quick diagrams and store different lighting setups right in your phone. Very useful!

Sylights allows you to create and save lighting diagrams, which is useful for not only planning shoots, but remembering how lights were arranged for particular photos. You can browse diagrams others have created as well.

Hyperfocal DOF - Available for free on Android and iOS

Hyperfocal distance is a very useful concept for landscape photographers in particular. The hyperfocal distance is the closest distance at which you can focus your lens while keeping objects all the way to infinity sharp. While a rule of thumb exists that suggests you should focus about one-third of the way into your scene, this is not always the best option. Don't worry, you don't need to crunch any numbers out in the field because of apps like Hyperfocal DOF. It supports more than 1,600 camera models. You input your camera model, focal length and aperture and the app will give you the optimal hyperfocal distance.

Photographer's Tools - Available in free and $1.49 versions for Android

This app includes tools for viewing lighting conditions as well as calculating hyperfocal distance, exposure and even includes a gray card function for setting a custom white balance. The free version is ad supported, whereas the "Pro" version for $1.49 is an ad-free experience.

PhotoPills - Available for $9.99 on Android and iOS

In addition to performing many of the same tasks as The Photographer's Ephemeris, PhotoPills offers tools for calculating hyperfocal distance, exposure times, depth of field, field of view, time lapse and much more. The app also includes how-to articles. If you want a photography companion that practically does it all, this is it.

Long Exposure Calculator - Available for free on iOS

If you want the exposure calculator features of PhotoPills but don't want to pay, Long Exposure Calculator is free and lets you calculate exposure times when using neutral density filters. It's very useful and will help save you from frustrating trial and error out in the field. See below for a similar app on Android.

Exposure Calculator - Available for free on Android Easy Release - Available for $9.99 on Android and iOS

If you regularly work with models and commonly need photo releases, this app is perfect. The app is approved for use by Getty Images, iStockPhoto, Shutterstock and more and allows you to get a customizable release and automatically sync it to various cloud services. It's great for the on-the-go photographer who doesn't want to carry physical model releases. 

Apps for storing and sharing your photos

So we've looked at apps for getting great photos, from scouting to capturing and editing. Now that you've got great shots, what next? These apps are your best bets for sharing your work.

Flickr - Available for free on Android and iOS

Flickr is not only a great way to look at the work of others, but it's also a great way to share and store your own work. You can upload up to 1TB of photos entirely for free and access all your images from the cloud on your smartphone. Nifty!

Flickr allows you to store up to 1,000 GB of images and share them with people around the world. Flickr is also useful for scouting locations given the sheer number of tagged images other users have uploaded to the platform.

Instagram - Available for free on Android and iOS

Technically Instagram can also be used for capturing and editing images, but its capture and editing tools pale in comparison to the apps we listed at the top of this article. Where Instagram shines is sharing your work with the rest of the world. Around half a billion people have Instagram accounts, making it one of the largest internet communities out there. If you want to share your photos or simply view the work of many pros and get inspired, Instagram is a must have. I've also used this app for scouting locations.

Cluster - Available for free on Android and iOS

You don't always want to share your photos with the world. That's where Cluster comes in. This free app lets you share images with a specific private group of people, such as sharing family photos with your own family or photos from a party with some friends. You could also use it to share images from a session with a client. 

Apps for Your Specific Camera

If your camera has Wi-Fi and/or Bluetooth built-in - which most do these days - there's a dedicated smartphone app for your camera. Many of them allow for syncing images from your camera to your phone and even offer remote control functionality. If you haven't downloaded the app for your camera yet, you should! You can download camera apps from all the major manufacturers below.

A better camera really shines with the hardware available on the stylo 2 v. Messenger: Caught on camera, St. Louis County cops cover their tracks

A federal Homeland Security law enforcement officer was assigned to Metro transit patrol as part of a beefed-up security plan for the busy Fourth of July weekend.

He didn't like what he saw.

Late in the afternoon on July 4, the officer walked into the North Hanley MetroLink substation to find 12 St. Louis County police officers milling about. A resulting Metro check of video footage determined that not only were county police officers loitering in the North Hanley security office instead of patrolling trains or platforms, at one point they covered the security camera with an envelope and tape.

That incident was not unique. At least eight times since 2015, the camera inside the MetroLink substation that serves the University of Missouri-St. Louis and Express Scripts has been covered by county police officers, according to records obtained by the Post-Dispatch through a public records request.

At a time in which St. Louis County Executive Steve Stenger has said he doubled the number of officers patrolling the transit system to deal with a spike in violence, the public documents, photos and video demonstrate a disturbing pattern of county police officers loitering in offices, covering a camera and refusing to cooperate with Metro public safety officials.

"I don't see how any of this is serving the public interest or public safety," said Metro Department of Public Safety Chief Richard Zott, who agreed to an interview after the Post-Dispatch obtained the records.

For the past several months, Metro officers have been unable to enforce laws, even for skipping fares, on the transit lines in the county, under legal threat from both county Police Chief Jon Belmar and St. Louis County Prosecutor Bob McCulloch. Those county officials allege that the Metro officers — all of whom have Class A peace officer licenses through the state of Missouri — lack the proper legal authority to enforce the law.

But the county police officers who are supposed to keep transit lines safe have been found hiding away in security offices rather than patrolling trains and platforms, according to the records kept by Metro. Maintaining those records has become more difficult in the past few months as the dispute between the county and Metro has intensified. Last year, the county officers patrolling Metro stopped using a radio channel that the Metro officers could also monitor. And for the past few months, county police have stopped sharing duty logs with Metro.

St. Louis County police spokesman Sgt. Shawn McGuire declined to make either Belmar or Capt. Scott Melies, who supervises the county officers who police MetroLink, available for an interview.

Metro operates 46 miles of light rail and 79 bus routes in its territory, which spans St. Louis County, the city of St. Louis, and St. Clair County in Illinois. The records obtained by the Post-Dispatch raised the most serious questions about St. Louis County police officers assigned to Metro.

In response to spikes in violence, including shootings and assaults on light-rail platforms in the city and county, St. Louis County now supervises all the officers working the transit system under a memorandum of understanding signed by regional political leaders.

On any given day, Zott and his staff don't know which county officers are patrolling Metro or where they are stationed. "We have no idea what they do or where they go," Zott said.

On July 4, after the federal Homeland Security officer reported he saw no county officers patrolling platforms, a Metro officer checked the cameras at the North Hanley station.

From 5:52 p.m. to 9:48 p.m., both the video and a memo from Metro indicate, there were five to 12 county police officers milling around in the security office at any given time. At 11:11 p.m., a county officer grabs an envelope, steps on a chair and covers the camera. A little more than an hour later, the camera is uncovered, and two county police officers leave the station.

The next day, the act is repeated by two county officers in the North Hanley security office. The camera is covered from 11:27 p.m. to 12:31 a.m.

Metro posted a camera in its North Hanley security office after an incident involving a county police officer in 2014. Officer Dawon Gore was charged with assaulting a Metro customer, grabbing him on the platform and taking him into the office. County internal affairs investigators asked Metro for camera footage inside the office. At the time, there was no camera. Metro installed one, "to protect both the county officers and our officers," Zott said.

Metro Public Safety Detective Daniel Donahue, who reviewed the footage requested by the Post-Dispatch, said that unlike the cameras on platforms, the camera in the North Hanley security office isn't regularly monitored. But if complaints are made, officers pull the footage. It is in those circumstances that Metro officials discovered at least eight instances of the camera being covered.

The first time Zott saw such a video was in December 2015 after a Metro information technology employee who was working in the North Hanley office reported to supervisors that a county police officer was asleep in the office. A check of the video footage showed the camera had been covered.

"I saw this, and I thought it was ludicrous," Zott said.

On Dec. 4, 2015, Zott sent a screenshot of a county officer covering a camera to Melies, who supervises the county MetroLink officers.

"Really?" Zott wrote. "I'm at a loss."

Zott said he never received a response from Melies.

A retired special agent with the federal Defense Criminal Investigative Service, Zott says he continues to be confounded as to why county officers would cover a camera in a police office.

One of the most recent camera-covering incidents happened June 25, just hours after a 14-year-old boy was beaten and robbed by two armed assailants at the North Hanley station.

That evening, a public safety officer noticed something strange.

There were no county police officers patrolling the platform.

Where were they? the Metro public safety officer wondered.

They were loitering in the North Hanley security office, up to five St. Louis County officers at a time, "feet kicked up on a desk," apparently "texting or using their phone apps" and not "engaged in any police duties," according to a memo a different Metro officer wrote to Zott the next day after checking video from the camera.

"At 9:58:35 p.m., an unidentified County officer stands up and places a white envelope, with the seal facing the camera, covering the lens of the camera, and remained there as it is now," he wrote. "Because the camera was disabled, it is unknown how long the officers remained in the office."

The camera was covered for a total of 18 hours, the Metro memo indicates.

"There is only one purpose to cover the lens of a camera," the officer wrote, "to hide whatever activities someone is engaged in that they want concealed or undiscovered."

Android Nokia 8 flagship goes high-end with dual camera and Zeiss optics

Nummela was the product manager overseeing the iconic Nokia 6630 and the 6680 handsets. It appears like the Nokia 8 smartphone will look a lot like the Nokia's recently-launched, mid-range smartphone, the Nokia 5. The smartphone will reportedly come out later this year. Its troubles started with the iPhone and the dawn of the smartphone era. This means that Android O and possibly Android P updates will be available to the phones when time comes.

In short, inertia or a lack of innovation killed Nokia. The new company is now selling a bunch of affordable Nexus-like devices that run a pretty vanilla version of Android, and it's preparing an assault on flagship handsets from Apple, Samsung, and everyone else. Microsoft phased out the Nokia brand so loyal Nokia customers would embrace its Windows phone instead.

That's the same camera brand as powered Nokia handsets of old, and it's already been confirmed that HMD Global (the company behind Nokia's new phones) has partnered with the brand. This follows the speculation of what the new brand by the HMD Global and the Finnish group will be.

The authenticity of this leak is still in question like this "accidental" listing of the HMD flagship smartphone was later taken down, however, the image looks pretty much legit. "What interests me about this video [https://vimeo.com/217476759 ] is that it shows 4 smartphones, but Nokia only sells 3 (none w dual lens)", posted Blass.

Earlier, there was images which were leaked online. HMD Global is expected to unveil the Nokia 8 smartphone on July 31, 2017. Benchmarking apps suggest that the phone would come with QUALCOMM, Inc.

These specifications correspond to high-end phones, increasing the hype surrounding the phone. Also, reports are putting its starting price at about €600, but nothing is certain as the price may differ from country to country.

New Delhi. This is good news for people who love to share GIF images on Facebook. Facebook has released a new feature for its users, under which a small GIF can be made with the help of an in-app camera. It has been reported that GIF can be personalized through many frames and filters and shared on Facebook.

However, at the moment, Facebook has not yet released this feature publicly, the feature has made it available to only a few users. It is reported that after testing now it is being released for all users soon. How To Reset And Reinstall The Camera App In Windows 10

Windows Camera (popularly known as Camera) is one of the default apps that ship with Windows 10. The Camera app, although is not as feature-rich as third-party apps, supports high-quality video recording and photo capturing.

If, at any point in time, the Camera app fails to record video or capture photos, you can easily fix the app by resetting it. Most of the common issues get fixed when you reset the Camera app.

If an issue persists even after resetting the Camera app, you can go ahead and reinstall the Camera app. Reinstalling the Camera app is simple. You just need to uninstall the Camera app and then install a new copy from Windows Store.

In this guide, we will see how to reset and reinstall the Camera app in Windows 10.

IMPORTANT: If you are having issues with the camera on your PC, we recommend you update camera's device driver or reinstall the driver before trying out resetting or reinstalling the Camera app. If the built-in camera is not working, check if you have disabled the camera in Windows 10.

Method 1 of 2

Resetting the Camera app

To reinstall, refer to instructions in Method 2 given below.

Step 1: Open the Settings app. Navigate to Apps > Apps & features.

Step 2: Look for the Camera app entry and click on the same to select it. You should now see Advanced options link.

Step 3: Click Advanced options link to open Storage usage and app reset page.

Step 4: Finally, click the Reset button. When you see the confirmation flyout, click the Reset button to reset the Camera app.

You may now launch the Camera app.

Method 2 of 2

Reinstalling the Camera app

Reinstall the Camera app only if the issue persists even after resetting the Camera app.

Unlike some other default apps, Camera app cannot be uninstalled via the Settings app. We need to use the Windows PowerShell or CCleaner to uninstall the Camera app and then install a fresh copy of the same from Windows Store. Here is how to do just that.

Step 1: Run Windows PowerShell as administrator. To do so, right-click on the Start button on the taskbar and then click Windows PowerShell (Admin) option. Alternatively, type PowerShell in Start/taskbar search field, right-click on Windows PowerShell entry and then click Run as administrator option.

Step 2: At the PowerShell window, copy and paste the following command. Press Enter key to execute the command.

Get-AppxPackage –AllUsers

Step 3: Now, look for Microsoft.WindowsCamera entry. Select the PackageFullName of Camera app and use Ctrl + C hotkey to copy it to the clipboard.

Step 4: Execute the following command to uninstall the Camera app.

Remove-AppxPackage PackageFullName

In the above command, replace PackageFullName with the actual PackageFullName that you copied in the previous step.

You may close the PowerShell window now.

Alternatively, you can use the popular CCleaner to uninstall default Windows 10 apps. Open CCleaner, click Tools and click Apps. Right-click on Camera app and then click Uninstall option. Click OK button when you see the confirmation dialog.

Step 5: Finally, open the Store app, search for Windows Camera app and then install the same.

Google Play App Roundup: Camera Roll, A Planet of Mine, and Virtua Tennis Challenge

We're really getting spoiled these days. There are great Android apps coming out all the time, but it can still be hard to find them amid all the clutter. The Google Play App Roundup is all about clearing the junk out of the way so you can find the best apps. Just click on the app name to go straight to the Google Play Store and pick up the app yourself.

Camera Roll

Every phone comes with a gallery app of some sort, but they're usually quite barebones and some are downright ugly. There are several good alternatives in the Play Store, including the new Camera Roll app. The name will probably appeal to recent iOS converts, but it's more than just a name. This is a capable and configurable gallery app.

The app opens with each folder on your device containing photos displayed as a large rectangle with a thumbnail image. This is only the default, though. There are several different layouts including small cards, large cards, and scrollable horizontal blocks. The dark theme can also be flipped over to light or completely black, if you so desire.

When you open a folder, Camera Roll starts showing off with some slick animations. The photo grid slides up from the bottom, and the images start as black and white. They re-saturate in about one second as you scroll. It's a neat effect. Tapping on individual photos also offers up a cool zooming animation. When you go back, the photo zooms back out into its place in the grid. Again, so slick.

Unfortunately, there's no built-in editing for Camera Roll. I'd like to have at least seen some support for cropping. However, tapping the edit button does bring up compatible apps like Snapseed. The info button hides a few interesting surprised, though. Tap this when viewing a photo to get all the EXIF information, along with the ability to edit. At the top, you also have a bar of the most common color swatches from the image. Tapping on any of them copies the hex code. I don't know how useful this is, but I really like it.

Should you have files that aren't showing up in the app, there's a toggle to show hidden files. Additionally, there's a file browser in the overflow menu. Launch that and you can navigate to any folder on the device to view images.

Camera Roll is free and has no ads. Give it a shot if your current gallery app is getting old.

A Planet of Mine

Exploring new worlds is tough in A Planet of Mine, a new strategy game on Android. The game starts out very simple, but in the space of a few minutes you could end up with a complex, interconnected global economy. Then, you have to take it interplanetary. You better hurry, though. You aren't the only species on the hunt for new planets.

In each game of A Planet of Mine, you pick from one of multiple races. There are chicken people, fox people, rino people, and more. Each one has a different perk that can help you along. The starting planet, and indeed all the planets, are represented as a spinning 2D wheel. Each of the 24 segments has a terrain type, which controls what you can build there. Your population needs someplace to live, first off. Then you need to have a stable supply of food. In this game, that's red berries. If you expand too fast and run out of food. Your inhabitants will start dropping dead. If everyone dies, that's game over.

Even though your people arrive on the planet via spaceship, your civilization starts with very little technology. You can chop down trees, mine the surface for rock, oil, and other resources, and build wells for water. Certain structures can generate ascension points, which level up your civilization and unlock more structures. You also have to generate science points to discover new technologies.

So how does all that fit together? For example, you can chop down trees, use a press to make them into paper, and use a workbench to make the books into paper, and use a research lab to turn books into science points. None of your buildings will do anything unless you have the inhabitants to run them, so you always have to keep the most basic levels running smoothly.

All your resources are shown in a grid at the top of the screen. The rotation of the planet represents time, and you can speed up the rotation to speed up time as well—just tap and drag. This is pretty clever. When you have gotten the necessary resources collected, you can add some inhabitants to your ship and fly to a nearby planet. You need to move with purpose here, because other races are also looking to colonize these planets. You can end up in conflicts that kill your inhabitants, which again, is a bad thing.

A Planet of Mine has a flattened voxel style with bright colors and simple sprites. It's easy to see what's going on from a glance. I also appreciate how different various planets and terrain types look. It's by no means a graphically intense game, that means it should play well on lots of phones. It's also entirely in portrait mode, and you can play with simple taps and swipes—great for casual play.

Virtua Tennis Challenge

You might recall a few weeks ago when Sega launched its new "Sega Forever" collection. The idea is the bring classic games to mobile with a free, ad-supported design. It started with a handful of games, and a promise to keep adding new titles. The first one to be added is Virtua Tennis Challenge.

This title might sound familiar in the realm of mobile, and that's because it's not technically new. This game was released back in 2012 as a paid game, and then left to languish. That version was pulled from the Play Store a while back, and now the Sega Forever version is available. This game is based on the console Virtua Tennis games, but with more mobile flavor.

I will say upfront that this game has a completely useless tutorial. It doesn't explain almost any of the controls, so you're better off tapping that question mark button at the bottom of the menu to read through everything. The default control scheme (and probably the one you will want to use) is based on swipes. The timing is also important, though.

Playing Virtua Tennis will take some getting used to on a touchscreen. Basically, you tap and drag to move your character around. As long as you're close to where the ball lands, you'll be able to return it. To pull off a good return, you need to swipe in advance. The earlier you do it, the more powerful your return will be. Your swipes can also adjust where on the court you are aiming. Swipe all the way up, and you'll aim for the backcourt. Stop halfway up, and it'll go just over the net. It becomes a very strategic sort of game once you get the hang of it. A separate gamepad is also supported.

The mechanics of tennis are well-known enough that I won't go into detail here. Suffice it to say the scoring system in Virtua Tennis Challenge is realistic. You can play tournaments or quick games. There's also a local Bluetooth multiplayer system. No online, though.

Visually, this game hasn't changed much from the original release. It looks quite nice for a mobile game during gameplay. Although the character models are a little blocky up close in the replays. The animations are all very smooth, though. Lines are also clean and free of jaggies. Note, the black bars in the images are because of the Galaxy S8's taller screen ratio, not the game itself.

Since this is a Sega Forever game, it's free with ads. They pop up every few sets, and can usually be dismissed right away. If you want to pay $1.99, they'll go away forever. That also includes offline play, which isn't supported in the free version.

This is undoubtedly a good step taken by Facebook. It will help people to add more interesting things to the platform. Moreover, it will also help people to include attractive stuff rather than including those things which spread negativity. We will see users bringing some innovative things in future. Therefore the whole feature is going to be valuable for most of the users. There are reports that at present a few iOS devices have received this feature. Currently, the exact date of availability of this feature in Android is not known. However, we may see it soon in coming weeks.

The Facebook Camera App Now Features a Built-In GIF Creator

With every new Facebook update, our walls become filled with posts from friends who either love or hate the change, and the majority of people tend to hate the changes. However, this new feature shouldn't bring any negative feedback to the social media giant. Facebook is gradually adding a built-in Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) creator to its Facebook camera app. To use it, all you have to do is swipe left to access the camera, and you will see the option to record your own GIF at the top of the screen.

The animated GIFs that you create will only last a few seconds, but the content can be anything you have in front of you. You can create a GIF of your dog doing a new trick, or your kids making funny faces. You'll have access to a broad range of fun effects and frames to personalize your GIF. At this time, the new feature is only available to a handful of people using the Facebook Photos app for iOS. Even with the latest updates installed, no Android users have reported that they have the new feature available on their Facebook Photos app. However, with the popularity of using GIFs growing among Facebook users on the main website, it is very likely that this option will be available soon to Android users as well.

This could be a very good thing, especially when you begin to see so much negativity on Facebook posts. Instead of getting involved in an 'Internet Argument!', you can instead create your own personalized GIF that may make someone laugh and bring a smile to their face. This isn't the first time that Facebook has introduced the use of animated GIFs to their users. Over the past few weeks, users have discovered that they can now leave small animated GIFs in their post comments. So far, people seem to enjoy this new addition and love adding various GIFs from their favorite movies and TV shows to express their opinion instead of using words. This latest update with the Facebook camera seems to be moving the social media platform in a positive direction.

The Gudak app turns your iPhone into a disposable camera

Before there were smartphones, disposable cameras used to be the go-anywhere cameras of choice for many casual photographers. If you are the nostalgic type, you can now get a simulated disposable camera experience on your iPhone, thanks to the new Gudak app by Korean startup Screw Bar.

Like a real disposable camera, the app offers a "film roll" of 24 shots and a small viewfinder.

Shoot through that roll and, once you've finished, it is sent to the app's "lab" where it's kept for three days of processing. You also have to wait twelve hours until you can "insert" a new roll of film, which means you probably want to be pretty careful with your shot selection.

Processed images show the typical color casts and occasional light leaks that should be familiar to anyone who has ever used a real disposable camera. If that sounds appealing (if a bit nostalgic and silly) to you, you can download the app now on the Apple App Store for $0.99. No word yet on an Android version.

Microsoft has launched 'Seeing AI' a new talking camera app for the blind.

Seeing AI is a free app that narrates the world around you. Designed for the blind and low vision community, this ongoing research project harnesses the power of AI to open up the visual world and describe nearby people, text, and objects.

"I really do think this app will be a game changer for many as it's just simple to use," said Jenine Stanley, who is legally blind and reviews apps and technology for Main Menu, the American Council of the Blind's tech radio show.

Optimized for use with VoiceOver, the app enables you to recognize:• Short Text - Speaks text as soon as it appears in front of the camera.• Documents - Provides audio guidance to capture a printed page, and recognizes the text, along with its original formatting.• Products - Scans barcodes, using audio beeps to guide you; hear the name, and package information when available.• People - Saves people's faces so you ca n recognize them, and get an estimate of their age, gender, and emotions.• Scenes (early preview) - Hear an overall description of the scene captured.• Images in other apps - Just tap "Share" and "Recognize with Seeing AI" to describe images from Mail, Photos, Twitter, and more.

They have released an AI app on iOS called "Seeing AI" that will help blind users or users with eyesight problem to see the world through their iPhone camera. When we open the app, we will see the camera on the phone display and the app will use there Artificial intelligence from the cloud to speak the whole situation in front of the phone camera.

The app can also identify the people you are familiar with have scanning on the go and that too offline. You can also use it for scanning the signboards on the road, product barcode or other similar things to know about them. This is pretty good example of the power of AI by which Microsoft aims to change the world. Microsoft had earlier released apps that tells your age by scanning your face using AI.

This app is currently available on iOS Store and can be downloaded. Microsoft had not given any information about whether this app will be coming in Android and Windows Store in future.

Simplistic Security Camera Apps

Thanks to the Snoop app old tablets and smartphones can now double as security cameras. The app, available on both iOS and Android, connects your smartphone with an extra device laying around your house. One device "casts" and the other "watches." The devices don't have to be on the same wireless network and the feed is encrypted.

The Snoop app's beauty lies in its simplicity. It's easy to use and setup. That being said it's not a legitimate alternative to an actual security camera.
