A South Korean startup designed a light bulb that has a camera inside and it's kind of creepy

A South Korean startup has designed a light bulb that has a camera inside.

The camera, called Tovnet, is WiFi enabled and has an app so users can check their feed in real-time.

The internet has been quick to question buyer's motives as there are worries that it could be used to spy on people.

Tovnet has reached its Kickstarter goal and it can be ordered online for £92.50.

OnePlus 5 camera app ported to OnePlus 3/3T with TWRP flashable zip

The OnePlus 5 camera app is a very simple yet feature rich alternative for camera lovers. The app has been ported to the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S7 and some more phones. It comes with Time-Lapse, Slow Motion, Pro Mode, Panorama, and HDR as well. But the ported apk doesn't work with the OnePlsu 3/3T because of the similar name. So a separate mod for the OnePlus 3/3T was carried out by XDA developer MatiazLopezxD.

The apk is a TWRP flashable zip. So you will have to be rooted & have latest TWRP installed. The app doesn't work with official firmware but it has been tested on Lineage OS 14.1, Resurrection Remix and Paranoid Android 7.1.2.

How to install OnePlus 5 camera app
  • Download the ZIP.
  • Reboot into TWRP.
  • Back up your complete device.
  • Flash the camera port zip by tapping install option.
  • Reboot.

Holo is the Most Fun AR Smartphone App I’ve Come Across

Ever since the Pokemon Go revolution, developers have been aggressively investing in apps powered by a series of Augmented Reality features. Whether it's morphing your selfies into creatures or trying out furniture before making the final purchase, AR has consistently proved its prowess over others. However, I didn't realize how powerful AR can become until I came across an app called "Holo".

    holo-ar-app-screenshots

Holo is a camera app that uses Augmented Reality to project 3D objects such as a tiger or a playful dog or Spiderman into the real world. The app lets you capture these scenes in real-time, hence you can position the camera according to your needs and produce fun videos or photos. Holo comes with a ton of objects you can experiment with including movie characters, celebrities, athletes, musicians, animals, comedians, and more. Once done, the app allows you to save these recordings in normal formats and share with everyone else.

Moreover, while shooting, you can modify the character's size and position on a granular level for creating a more natural-looking shot. Additionally, there's a store where you can download more objects in a jiffy and the best part is that everything's free as of now. Most of these objects are animated and come with audio as well which should come handy if you're recording a video. Unlike other similar alternatives, Holo works stupendously and doesn't bog down your phone while doing it. The virtual Holograms turn out exceedingly realistic and don't look like they've been squeezed into the environment.

Holo isn't perfect as yet. For starters, it doesn't properly interact with walls and surfaces. In addition to that, the characters don't move based on your phone's viewfinder. You've to manually place them every time. Perhaps, when Google and Apple's AR platforms (There's a Google Tango version as well) become more widespread, these type of apps will be more coherent. Until then, Holo is certainly an app you should try. It's available for free on both iOS and Android.

Kidcia launches the wide variety of RC Quadcopter drones with video camera & APP control

Kidcia is a company based in China that manufactures and supplies RC Quadcopter Drone with FPV Camera Live Video. They supply products and sell the same through e-commerce giants like amazon.

Advancements in technology and science has made our life not only easy but also fun. This has also led to the way kids and adults alike spend their leisure hours these days. A new range of toys have emerged with the changing times and falls under the category of r/c or radio controlled toys. These are special forms of vehicles that can be models of cars, trucks that are controlled via specially designed and modified radio transmitters. The toys can either have an electric motor or a specially designed miniature internal combustion engine as its driving mechanism. Kidcia has recently introduced a new range of r/c video drone that comes equipped with a 3 mega pixel camera. The company manufactures their products keeping in mind the aesthetic value of the model vehicles, but also keeping a check on the manufacturing cost of the same.

The cool drone is equipped with flexible and retractable propellers that adds to the already feature laden product. The drone can be controlled via an app using Wi-Fi and is supported by both Android and iOS devices.

RC Quadcopter Drone with FPV Camera Live Video - 2 Batteries - Flexible Foldable Aerofoils

The integrated circuitry and on board controllers installed with advanced flight controlling algorithms allows the drone fpv to hover at a fixed height steadily during the photography or during a video shoot. This also provides the user with the added fun of performing aerobic stunts including flips and rolls. The drones are pre programmed with 3 speed modes that allows the user with the choice of adapting with the environment. In case of indoor playing conditions, the minimum speed can be selected that also enables the user to save battery power. The outdoor playing conditions demands for more power therefore the mode that delivers maximum power is to be selected.

    Video Link: http://www.youtube.com/embed/14oY6zPg9ww

To prevent the drone form damage an excess of cushioning is provided at the base of the same which dampens the impact upon landing. The preloaded 'gravity' option incorporated in the firmware of the drones allows the user to learn how to fly the same without damaging the toy. This involves keeping the controlling device such as the smartphone or the tablet in a horizontal manner. The motors that power the propellers are of brushless in nature and therefore run at the maximum possible rpm. The addition of gyroscopes in the drones allows the same with advanced stability.

Camera found at Goodwill reveals forgotten photos of Mount St. Helens eruption

Decades after Mount St. Helens' deadly 1980 eruption, a photographer found these dramatic images in an old camera at Goodwill. USA TODAY

Photographer Kati Dimoff discovered previously unseen images of the Mount Helens eruption in a camera she found at Goodwill.(Photo: Kati Dimoff/kdimoffphotography.com)

A camera found at a Goodwill store in Portland, Ore., revealed long-forgotten images of the Mount St. Helens eruption.

Photographer Kati Dimoff told KIRO-TV that she often finds old cameras and develops the film she finds inside. In May, she found an Argus C2 camera at Goodwill. Like always, she dropped the film from the camera off to be developed, and told KIRO-TV that when she picked the pictures up a note was scrawled on the back of the packet.

"Is this from the Mount St. Helen eruption?"

    More coverage:

The images include shots showing Mount St. Helens from a distance, and others showed a larger ash cloud, according to Dimoff.

Thirty-seven years ago, Mount St. Helens erupted in Washington, spewing ash, rock, and hot gasses into the air and causing mud to flow down the mountainsides.

The eruption took place on May 18, 1980, at 8:32 a.m. PT and was "the deadliest and most economically destructive volcanic event in the history of the United States," according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The eruption killed 57 people and caused more than a billion dollars in damage. Ash blanketed the Pacific Northwest and stretched into 11 states and Canada. Fatalities included photojournalist Reid Blackburn, a USGS volcanologists named David Johnston and Harry Truman, a lodge owner in his 80s who rose to fame after he refused to leave the mountain in the weeks preceding the eruption.

"Another shot included a family in a backyard, who I'm hoping know the story of the camera," she told KIRO-TV.

After the photos were posted byThe Oregonian, Mel Purvis, contacted the news outlet and said he is in the pictures with his wife, son and grandmother. He believes the camera belonged to his grandmother, and Dimoff is planning to mail the camera and prints to him, The Oregonian reported.

"I almost fell out of my chair [when I saw the photos]," Purvis told The Oregonian. "That's me."

Apps to Know: TV time, simple habit & Halide camera

Please enable Javascript to watch this video

These Apps to Know can help you keep track of your TV shows, meditate when you have a few minutes and take professional level photos on your iPhone.

Follow KTLA Tech Reporter Rich DeMuro on Facebook or Twitter for cool apps, tech tricks & tips!

    Mentioned:

    TV Time

I love this app because it helps you keep track of the TV shows you're watching - or want to watch - no matter what channel or streaming service they are on. Add your shows and then mark episodes as you watch them. This way you never lose your place in a season! My other favorite part is the community discussion forums. You can still get that "watercooler" discussion feeling even if you're binging alone.

    Simple Habit

Only have a few minutes to meditate? Simple Habit can help. There are thousands of quick meditation programs inside this app. My favorite part is the "wheel" where you can get a program tailored to your mood and time frame. First, select an activity - like "big event," "walking" or "taking a break" and set how much time you have. You'll get a meditation program to fit. Brilliant. There are some free programs but this is primarily a subscription service. Try two weeks free (no credit card necessary) with my link.

    Halide Cam

This app lets you take pictures on your iPhone like a pro. You can adjust settings like you'd find on a DSLA camera - including focus, exposure and shutter. You can also shoot in RAW format. One feature you won't find? Zoom. That's because most pros would rather shoot the full frame and crop their picture when they edit it later. Halide is usually $5 but it's discounted to $3 for a limited time.

How to Scan QR Code With iPhone or iPad Camera App in iOS 11

Apple is hell-bent on laying off many third-party app developers as it has launched iOS 11 with many default features that were earlier available in third-party apps. For example, in iOS 10, users had to rely on third-party apps to scan papers and documents. But now, you can easily scan documents with iPhone or iPad in Notes App in iOS 11. Similarly, to scan QR code, iPhone and iPad users can now use the default Camera app. Earlier, iOS users had to scan QR codes on iPhone with Chrome. Thanks to the default feature, users can now scan QR code with iPhone camera.

By introducing the default scanning feature, Apple relieved iPhone and iPad users from using barcode scanning framework in the iOS SDK. If you are using iOS 11 beta on your device, you can scan QR code with iPhone camera.

Before you go ahead, make sure that you have a literature that has QR code printed on it.

Step #1: Hold your iPhone or iPad in your hands and open the Camera app. Remember that you don't need any third-party software; neither need you to download any app from App Store.

Step #2: Place a literature or product (that has QR code) on a flat surface (table or your work station) so that you can scan QR codes in iOS 11 Camera app easily.

Step #3: Now point the Camera app at the QR code (which is, as mentioned above, either in a print or on a display).

The Camera app will automatically scan the QR code and information encrypted in the code. The information will be extracted by Camera app from the code.

Similarly, you can use your Camera app to scan QR code on your computer or laptop screen. Many websites provide information in the form of QR code, which can be scanned via Camera app on iPhone or iPad. Simply point the camera at QR code displayed on your laptop or computer screen and the related website will be opened.

Apple will surely enhance this feature in its public beta of iOS 11 and users will find it more interesting to scan QR code with iPhone camera.

How to Scan QR Codes Using the Camera App in iOS 11

Up until now, scanning QR codes in iOS required you to use a third-party app such as Google Chrome, but iOS 11 brings an end to this by introducing a built-in QR code scanner.

This new feature is baked into the Camera app allowing you to scan QR codes directly from the Lock screen. Like many other features, QR code scanner is a function that Apple didn't demonstrate during the iOS 11 announcement at WWDC 2017. There just wasn't enough time to showcase all of the new features that came with iOS 11.

Nonetheless, it's good to see that iOS 11 is finally bringing one of the most requested features to iOS, such as native screen recorder, QR code scanning, customizable Control Center, and more. Using the new QR code scanner is very easy and simple. In fact, you'll be surprised to know how it works.

Step 1: Open the Camera app.

Step 2: Point your camera at a QR code, which will either be printed or presented in digital format. Tap on the screen to focus if required.

Step 3: And that's it! The Camera app will recognize the QR code and scan it automatically. Once the information is processed, a notification banner appears at the top with details of the output. You can tap on the banner to view the output, which could either be a website URL, directions to a location, hotlink to an app, piece of text, etc.

As you can see, it's very easy to use the QR code scanner in iOS 11. You no longer have to depend on third-party apps now that the Camera app has this feature built-in. One of the interesting features of the scanner is that it can also scan a router's QR code to quickly join its wireless network.

Apple has already released the first beta of iOS 11 to registered developers. The beta version allows developers to update their apps for iOS 11 and lets Apple track and collect information on bugs. While it's not recommended that normal users install iOS 11 beta, there is a way to get it without a developer account. 7 amazing things your smartphone's camera can do

Camera phones are changing the landscape of photography. Professionals are carrying them instead of hefty DSLRs, and indie filmmakers are using them to shoot everything from music videos to feature-length dramas.

With advanced features and tons of free editing software, they are becoming more sophisticated every year. Your smartphone may contain the lens of the future.

Tip in a Tip: Apple's camera app is good, but there are better free apps to capture and share your memories.

But that little camera in your phone is useful for so much more than snapshots and videos. If you ever dreamed of having a scanner, game system and universal translator in your pocket, these apps have made that fantasy a reality.

Here are seven amazing things your smartphone can do.

    1. Consult a virtual decorator

A few years ago, IKEA developed a wild new feature that lets customers raise their phones or tablets in a room at home and then plant a piece of furniture in the picture. The 3D image adjusts to the screen's POV, looking extremely realistic, even though the furniture isn't really there. This "augmented reality" feature helps customers imagine how an item will look before they buy it.

Hot on IKEA's heels is Amikasa, an iOS app that not only helps you design interior spaces, but also inserts imaginary décor in real-life settings. You can add faucets and cabinets, and even change the wallpaper.

    2. Scan documents

Scanning paper documents as PDFs is convenient, but using scanners themselves can be a real ordeal. The ones on traditional printers can be slow and cumbersome, and scanning large bundles at a print shop can cost you a pretty penny. But there are apps, such as Genius Scan and Evernote Scannable, that use your smartphone's camera to convert hard copies into a digital format. You can even scan multiple pages and include them in the same document, a convenience that used to be nigh on the impossible.

Meanwhile, Adobe just launched a stellar app that scans physical documents with your smartphone's camera uses optical character recognition (OCR) software to save them as PDF files. Click here to check it out.

Android users have another option: The Google Drive app has document scanning capabilities.

    3. Shop in three dimensions

When you flip through a magazine, some ads are so vivid and colorful that they seem to leap off the page. With the ROAR app, the ads actually do leap off the page, at least in the display of your camera phone. You can quickly scan a photo of a cute sundress, for example, and within seconds your display will show that outfit in three dimensions.

ROAR also lets you take photos of meals and beverages and instantly find out their ingredients. You can scan items in a store to compare the price with what other retailers are charging. If you pass an eye-catching movie poster, you can capture its image and instantly order movie tickets.

    4. Translate language

When the Word Lens app hit the market a few years ago, users were astonished by its ability to "read" signs in foreign languages. The app even used the same font and style in its visual translation.

This magical technology was later scooped up by Google, which has made it part of the broader Google Translate app.

Other services use the same gimmick, helping you translate menus and signage from wildly different writing systems, all using your camera phone. But the standard, for now, is still the free Google app.

    5. Learn Your Wines

Wine is a complicated beverage. There is so much to know about a given year, vintner and vintage. In the past, wine aficionados had to memorize all that information or refer to a book. But now you can learn about a particular label at a glance, thanks to the Vivino app.

Just scan the label on a bottle of wine, and you'll find out everything there is to know, including personalized recommendations. Vivino has a database of more than 3 million wines, so you'll be hard-pressed to find a bottle that isn't included.

    6. Augmented reality games

Unless you were living in a submarine last year, you are probably familiar with the global obsession that was Pokémon Go. This game sent millions of players running through their neighborhoods in search of little creatures, guided by the motto, "Gotta catch 'em all!"

This was just the beginning of the phenomenon known as augmented reality games, which create real-time, real-world backdrops for in-game objects. For example, when you play ARBasketball, you can find a virtual hoop anywhere you go. Or play with the Bowmaster, which inserts targets in your physical surroundings.

If you are a fan of the undead, you will probably get your thrills from Zombies Everywhere!, which turns your real world into an apocalyptic zombie battleground. You will never look at your neighborhood sidewalk or office cubicle the same way again. For Android, check out TableZombies for a similar augmented reality game.

    7. Security camera

When you upgrade to a new smartphone, you usually face a difficult question: What do you do with your older model? Well, one option is to repurpose it as motion-activated security camera. The Manything app uses your smartphone camera to monitor your pets, your home, your kids or whatever else needs a watchful eye.

Manything has programmable motion detection zones, cloud-based DVR, time-lapse and live streaming. All you need is another device with Manything installed (to use it as your remote viewer

and controller) and you will have a low-cost, around-the-clock surveillance system.

How To Make Android O New Clock & Camera Apps Work on Your Nexus or Pixel

Android O doesn't have an official code name yet, but it's certainly got plenty of cool new features. The OS won't officially debut until Q3 2017, but we've gotten our hands on some of the updated stock apps thanks to the Android beta program. How Make Android O New Clock & Camera Apps Work on Your Nexus or Pixel Developer krisyarno went ahead and pulled the updated Clock and Camera apps from the latest preview build of Android O, and while not much has changed, you'll be happy to know that you can install these apps as an update on your Nougat-powered Pixel or Nexus without being rooted. Even better, they're just regular APKs, so installation couldn't be any easier.  Requirements
  • Pixel or Nexus device running Android 7.1 or higher
  • "Unknown Sources" enabled
  • Step 1Install the New Clock & Camera To try out the latest Clock and Camera apps from Android O, start by tapping each of the download links below. From there, open each APK from your notification tray or with any file browser, then just press "Install" when prompted.
  • Download the Android O Clock app (.apk)
  • Download the Android O Camera app (.apk)
  • Step 2Enjoy the New Features At this point, your stock Camera and Clock apps will have been updated to the latest versions from Android O. Like I said, not much has changed, but one difference is that the Clock app uses a dark gray background regardless of the time of day. Previously, the background was a light blue color in the morning, then got darker after sunset.

Android Nougat clock (left); Android O clock (right). Functionally, the Camera app isn't any different, so pictures you take will look exactly the same as they always have. But now, there's a more obvious way to switch between photo and video modes. Previously, you could swipe left or right on the viewfinder to switch between modes. That gesture is still present, but now, there's an icon that you can tap to switch between photo and video modes. This icon appears on either side of the shutter button depending on which mode you're in.

So nothing groundbreaking, but it's nice to have the latest and greatest — especially without having to worry about the potential bugs that would come along with installing the full Android O preview build. How are you liking these new apps from Android O? Let us know in the comment section below.

Camera apps and the Anti-Distracted Driving Act

"They don't need to convince anybody, not when you look at what iOS 11 will be delivering", said Carolina Milanesi of Creative Strategies, when asked why Apple did not restate its "iPad is a computer" message from the stage of the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) Monday. If you recently backed up your device and/or checked in with your IT department, you could be on your way in a matter of minutes.

The File app is updated to accommodate local, iCloud Drive, Dropbox, etc. files accordingly.

Apple's next iPhone, set to come out later this year, is expected to feature a wide range of new capabilities, thanks to a update coming to the iOS mobile operating system.

Making a backup is completely optional but highly recommended.

When you're going to make an important tech investment, knowing the basics is a necessity.

It's another standout feature of iOS 11. In Dawson's words, "You'll never see [Apple] use the argument that [the iPad Pro is] the end all and the be all".

You'll now be able to edit these and select which frame is used as the still part of the photo. If you're on a slower Wi-Fi network, the download could take upwards of 15 minutes.

The changes to the screen could mean even better battery performance than you expect with an iPad although it is still rated as being able to deliver 10 hours of battery.

But company officials refrained from repeating CEO Tim Cook's assertion of a year ago that the iPad Pro makes "the ultimate replacement device for customers switching from PC notebooks", or a 2016 TV ad's tagline of, "Imagine what your computer could do. if your computer was an iPad Pro".

Despite its size, the iOS 11 beta installation shouldn't take too long to complete.

The new ARKit allows iOS developers to build apps using augmented reality (AR) technology that rely on the device's camera to view real-world environments with the addition of digital elements. If you ever want to reinstall it, all you have to do is tap the gray icon and everything is back to the way it was.

NOTE: Apple itself strongly recommends installing on a secondary system or device. Let's have a look. It'll hold your hand through the entire process.

We will keep you updated with new and improved features that debut with iOS 11, tvOS 11, or macOS 10.13 High Sierra in the future.

He'd also like to see things taken a step further. I'm not sure what I think of it just yet, at least judging from the screenshots. IOS 11 Camera App Recognizes QR Codes

Apple brings its traditional file management to the iPad with iOS 11.

iOS 11 will turn your camera into a "smart camera".

Apple announced its newest iOS 11 firmware for iOS devices a few days back at its WWDC 2017. When you tap a particular app inside the iPhone storage page, you can click Offload App, which will also make that app appear greyed-out on your home screen, and allow you to reinstall it at any time. Thanks to iOS 11, this will be a thing of the past.

If you are one of the remaining people still rocking an iPhone 5 or iPhone 5c, Apple has confirmed some really bad news for you. New features include sweeping new upgrades to Siri, a redesigned Control Center and App Store, and a brand-new Apple Pay feature that lets you send or receive money to your contacts via iMessage.

Afghan soldier kills to United States soldiersIn a separate incident, two Afghan border police officers were killed in a US airstrike in southern Helmand province Friday night. It's the second time this year that an incident involving an Afghan soldier has resulted in the deaths of Americans.

The feature, which is called "Do Not Disturb While Driving", will come as part of Apple's upcoming iOS 11 software. This year, the company is up to iOS 11 and explained numerous new features during its developers keynote presentation Monday.

Another important feature that's coming to iOS 11 is the flexibility to drag and drop text, files and folders anywhere on the screen.

Apple today introduced an all-new 10.5-inch iPad Pro and a new 12.9-inch iPad Pro.

This app pulls in all your files and even works with third-party apps like Dropbox or Google Drive, so you have everything all in one place. Or, if you get a text message asking for money, Siri will suggest iMessage's Apple Pay integration with the exact amount that's been requested. On top of all that they can be easily shared and are compatible with other devices, says Apple.

Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins knows where she'd take the sequelWonder Woman is now holding a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes , making it certifiably "Fresh" with an A CinemaScore . It also topped all but one film from DC's main competitor, Marvel Entertainment, which is owned by Disney.

Obviously, Apple has done a lot with the newest version of iOS. While some apps already featured such an option, some high-profile apps like Uber only gave users two choices: to always allow location access or to never allow location access.

In April, The New York Times reported on a tense conversation between Apple CEO Tim Cook and Uber's Travis Kalanick, during which Cook scolded the chief executive and threatened to remove Uber from the App Store for violating Apple's developer guidelines.

But what if you're a passenger in a auto and your phone goes to Do Not Disturb mode, even though you're not driving?

Shutterdial Is A Windows App The Uses Your Camera Settings To Find Images

When it comes to using a digital camera or the DSLR, you ought to know different camera settings like shutter speed, aperture, ISO, etc. Also, the lens can make your images beautiful. If you are starting your photography course, you may want to check some beautiful images shot by different photographers. Obviously, you can opt for various image sharing platforms such as Flickr. However, if you want to find images based on camera settings like aperture, shutter speed, etc. you may want to visit a website like Shutterdial. Flickr, 500px, etc. are excellent websites that allow people to check some images shot by various cameras. However, you need to open every photo to check the EXIF data or metadata. If you are in a hurry, you may not find the perfect image that you are looking for. However, Shutterdial will allow you to find images based on category, lens, aperture, and shutter speed. It is a free web app, and you can utilize it without having an expert knowledge about cameras or photography. Shutterdial find Images based on Camera Settings Search or Find Images by Camera Settings Before using this website, you should know the background process. The website gathers images from Flickr and 500px. When a user makes a search on this website, the implemented API makes a search on Flickr and 500px and finds out the suitable images right away. In other words, when you make a search, Shutterdial reads all the data of all the images on Flickr and 500px and then finds what you are looking for. To get started with this tool, head over to the Shutterdial.com website. There you can enter different values such as image category (birds, animals, landscape, wildlife, sunset, and much more), lens size, aperture, and shutter speed. You will then find some images displayed right on your screen. Do you have the permission to use those images on your website? In simple words, it depends. It depends on the picture license. Although Shutterdial shows images on their website, you may not use all the images on your own website. A vast majority of images have Copyright, and very few of them are licensed under Creative Commons. So you should check the license on Flickr or 500px before using them anywhere.

Android O Dev Preview 3 Brings UI Changes To Camera App

The default system Camera app received a number of user interface changes in the latest developer preview of Android O that was released on Thursday, with the mobile tool now boasting a new toggle for quickly switching between shooting modes, as well as some design tweaks. The digital toggle introduced with the Camera 4.4 build is meant to serve as an alternative method of switching between Photo and Video modes of the app, as users are still able to simply swipe the main interface to jump between the two. The toggle button flanks the main Shutter one and will be situated to its right if you're about to shoot portrait video or left if you have switched to the portrait Photo mode, i.e. up and down if you're holding the device horizontally. The toggle can either be pressed or swiped in order to switch between the two modes and seemingly doesn't have any other features, though the Mountain View, California-based tech giant may opt to expand on its functionalities in the future.

The Shutter button itself was also redesigned with the new Camera update as its gray circle is now larger, leaving less of its white edges visible. The end result of this design change is only barely obvious and it's currently unclear why Google even decided to implement it in the first place. Finally, the camera toggle button that allows users to switch between the main and selfie camera setup of their device has been redesigned in a somewhat more noticeable manner, with its camera icon now being replaced by a simple circle. This particular change results in a more visually consistent user interface of the app, though some users may find that the new icon isn't as telling as the old one whose design was more straightforward and directly indicative of its functionality. Refer to the gallery beneath this writing to see how the changes to the Android system Camera app look in practice.

As the new tweaks and additions to Camera have been introduced in the form of a client-side update to the app, it's possible that the latest version of the mobile tool also ships with some performance improvements. Apart from this and some other changes, the Android O Developer Preview 3 debuted finalized APIs that allow developers to get their apps ready for the upcoming stable release of Android 8.0.

iOS 11 Camera App Recognizes QR Codes

Apple has updated the Camera app in iOS 11 beta with support for recognizing QR codes.

The implementation is simple. Open the Camera app. Point it at a QR code and a notification appears. Tapping the notification will perform an appropriate action. For example, if the QR code points to a web link, then tapping the notification will open the link in mobile Safari.

Check out a couple screenshots below and please follow iClarified on Twitter, Facebook, Google+, or RSS for more iOS 11 updates.

Halide for iOS Review: An intuitive camera app which offers a lot of control and some neat features

    by Jeremy Gray

posted Tuesday, June 6, 2017 at 2:00 PM EDT

The built-in camera app on iPhone is fine for many purposes, especially for capturing quick shots. However, it does not offer the user much in the way of control. There are numerous third-party apps which aim to put the photographer in control of their iPhone's built-in camera in ways the native camera app does not. A new app that fits the bill is Halide by Chroma Noir. The app is developed by Ben Sandofsky and Sebastiaan de With. Sandofsky is a former tech lead on Twitter for iPhone, iPad and Mac. Sebastiaan de With is a former designer for Apple.

I like having my iPhone with me for capturing shots while out and about. I don't always want to carry my dedicated camera gear and the iPhone does a good job at capturing nice images in many situations. As a photographer, however, I dislike the built-in camera app on iOS because it doesn't offer me control over my photos. I'm regularly on the hunt for new camera apps and Halide caught my eye last week, so I purchased it and have been experimenting with it.

A RAW image captured by Halide and then processed in Photoshop.

Halide includes numerous cool features including:

  • Intuitive gesture-based user interface
  • Manual focus and focus peaking
  • Manual controls over exposure, ISO and white balance
  • Live histogram
  • RAW image capture
  • Grid overlay and built-in level
  • Intelligent automatic mode
  • It is worth pointing out that focus peaking, live histogram and RAW capture features require an iPhone 6S, iPhone 7 or iPhone SE. The other features work on iPhone 5 and newer models.

The gesture-based user interface is excellent. The built-in camera app may not be versatile, but it is easy to use, and Halide achieves the same ease of use without removing control. The app is organized well, although you can reorganize buttons at the top if you so desire. Sliding up and down on the display adjusts exposure compensation and sliding down from the top of the screen brings up manual controls. It looks great and works well.

The user interface in Halide is very nice, especially the live histogram and gesture-based controls.

The live histogram works very well, but the focus peaking feature leaves something to be desired. Manual focus itself is fine and works well – although the iPhone's autofocus works well in most cases, in my experience – but the focus peaking is not sensitive enough to be of much help when manually focusing.

Another issue I have with Halide is that it does not allow full access to your photos, but rather only shows the most recent image added to your phone's Photos app. It's annoying to have to leave the app to review multiple photos. For users who want quick filters, such as black and white, there is no option for that within the app.

Ultimately, Halide is a pretty good app with a great user interface and some neat features, but it does feel incomplete in its current state. Nonetheless, it's a promising app and there's a lot here to like. Halide is available now for $2.99, although the price will be increasing shortly.

Nest security camera knows who’s home with Google face technology

By Michael Liedtke, The Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO — Nest Labs is adding Google's facial recognition technology to a high-resolution home-security camera, offering a glimpse of a future in which increasingly intelligent, internet-connected computers can see and understand what's going on in people's homes.

The Nest Cam IQ, unveiled last week, will be Nest's first device to draw upon the same human-like skills that Google has been programming into its computers — for instance, to identify people in images via its widely used photo app. Facebook deploys similar technology to automatically recognize and recommend tags of people in photos posted on its social network.

Nest can tap into Google's expertise in artificial intelligence because both companies are owned by the same parent company, Alphabet Inc.

With the new feature, you could program the camera to recognize a child, friend or neighbor, after which it will send you notifications about that person being in the home.

Nest isn't saying much about other potential uses down the road, though one can imagine the camera recognizing when grandparents are visiting and notifying Nest's internet-connected thermostat to adjust the temperature to what they prefer. Or it might be trained to keep a close eye on the kids when they are home after school to monitor their activities and send alerts when they're doing something besides a list of approved activities.

    THE COST OF FACIAL RECOGNITION

The new camera will begin shipping in late June for almost $300. You'll also have to pay $10 a month for a plan that includes facial recognition technology. The same plan also will include other features, such as alerts generated by particular sounds — barking dogs, say — that occur out of the camera's visual range.

The camera only will identify people you select through Nest's app for iPhones and Android devices. It won't try to recognize anyone that an owner hasn't tagged. Even if a Nest Cam IQ video spies a burglar in a home, law enforcement officials will have to identify the suspect through their own investigation and analysis, according to Nest.

    PRIVACY CONCERNS

Facial recognition is becoming more common on home-security cameras. Netatmo, for instance, introduced a security camera touting a similar facial recognition system in 2015. That camera sells for about $200, or $100 less than the Nest Cam IQ.

The way that the Nest and Netatmo cameras are being used doesn't raise serious privacy concerns because they are only verifying familiar faces, not those of complete strangers, said Jennifer Lynch, who specializes in biometrics as a senior staff attorney for the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a digital advocacy group.

But Lynch believes privacy issues are bound to crop up as the resolution and zoom capabilities of home security cameras improve, and as engineers develop more sophisticated ways of identifying people even when an image is moving or only a part of a face is visible. Storing home-security videos in remote data centers also raises security concerns about the imagery being stolen by computer hackers. "It definitely could become a slippery slope," Lynch said.

The privacy issues already are thorny enough that Nest decided against offering the facial recognition technology in Illinois, where state law forbids the collection and retention of an individual's biometric information without prior notification and written permission.

    FURTHER DETAILS

Nest's $10-a-month subscription includes video storage for 10 days. Video can be stored up to 30 days with an upgrade to a subscription plan costing $30 per month.

The high-end camera supplements lower-resolution indoor and outdoor cameras that Nest will continue to sell for almost $200. Neither of the lower-end cameras is equipped for facial recognition.

The high-end camera supplements lower-resolution indoor and outdoor cameras that Nest will continue to sell for almost $200. Neither of the lower-end cameras is equipped for facial recognition.

Arsenal aims to give you the perfect camera shot using artificial intelligence

Arsenal aims to give you the perfect camera shot using artificial intelligence

There's a difference between having a DSLR camera and knowing how to effectively use it. It's even become difficult for the professionals to sometimes capture the best shot in an unfamiliar environment. Manually adjusting the camera is also time-consuming. However, now there's a new device called Arsenal, which is a new attachment for your DSLR or mirrorless camera that will help you take the best shot using artificial intelligence.

No matter what is the condition of the environment, light, temperature, this intelligent assistant for your DSLR will help you get the perfect shot every time. This ultra light device comes with a compatible app for iOS and Android device to let you control your camera with your smartphone.

Missing the perfect shot? Never again!

Activating Arsenal's AI assistant setting is just a matter of a single tap. Trained on thousands of great photos, its AI assistant can visualize the optimal settings for the scene you're about to shoot. Using 18 different environmental factors, it then fine tunes those settings and provides you perfect settings for any shot.

Go wireless and control your camera with your smartphone

With the help of its compatible app, you can now control your camera with your smartphone from up to 100 feet away. Just take your phone and adjust the shutter speed, aperture and ISO, preview the shot and finally trigger the shutter from your smartphone. Also, instead of reviewing images from your camera's tiny screen, you can now review it on your smartphone and share it on social media.

Tricky light? Not a problem anymore

Arsenal makes it easier for you to capture scenes with High Dynamic Range (HDR) by automating advanced photo stacking techniques. It lets you take multiple exposures in seconds and merge them into a single RAW or JPG file on your camera without any post production.

    arsenal

    Focus sharp

Arsenal lets you capture your entire scene in sharp focus with the help of focus stacking. It first measures the optimal number of exposures, then puts them at various focus positions, and finally unites them into a single crystal clear image.

    arsenal

No need of expensive neutral density filters

If you're planning to buy some expensive neutral density filters for your camera, avoid it. Arsenal helps you capture images with rich color and dramatic motion blurs.

    Outstanding Timelapses

There will be fewer photographers who don't like time lapses. Ryan Stout, the creator of Arsenal and his team claim to design the best time-lapse interface. All you have to do just adjust the parameters, and then ask this intelligent assistant to synthesize the exposure in changing the light for a smooth day-to-night transition. It will do the rest of the work. You can then leave your camera working and come back in the middle of the process and make some adjustment.

    arsenal

    Supports popular DSLRs

Dozens of popular DSLR and mirrorless camera brands such as Canon, Nikon, Sony, and Fuji are supported by Arsenal. This device connects to your camera via USB and you can control it from your smartphone.

    Backed by Artificial Intelligence

To create this AI device, Stout taught a number of convolutional neural networks (or CNNs) to analyze images. This is the same algorithm used in self-driving cars. To train basic feature recognition for his neural sets, he drew on a number of public datasets, and then fed Arsenal with high-quality photos taken from Flickr to teach it what good camera settings look like.

The device is currently on Kickstarter where it has already raised $769,087 with 19 days remaining in the campaign. If you want to get one for yourself you can pre-order one now for $150 as a Kickstarter exclusive. It's time to see if the mainstream camera companies consider this tech worthy.

Snapchat firm launches Spectacles camera glasses in Europe

Snap Inc, the maker of Snapchat, is doubling down on its camera-enabled sunglasses, making them available across Europe.

The hardware, called Spectacles, will be available online and also in location-hopping vending machines, including at the London Eye.

But this isn't (just) a publicity stunt: technology companies are locked in a fierce battle to own your camera.

Facebook has said it wants an augmented-reality future based on people's cameras.

Google recently unveiled Lens, a technology that turns your camera into a search engine, giving you information about anything you point it at - from buildings and flowers to people.

Pinterest's chief executive has said that "a lot of the future of search is going to be about pictures instead of keywords".

And Apple is said to be developing its own smart glasses.

Snap led the charge here. In its initial public offering filing in February, it said: "Snap Inc is a camera company."

It had already launched Spectacles in September 2016.

Since then, though, the company has had a tough time.

Facebook has been busy copying Snapchat's features into its own apps, including Instagram and Messenger as well as the main Facebook app.

Snap's first earnings report in May was disappointing, posting a $2.2 billion loss for the first quarter; its shares are still trading at less than their IPO price.

In that context, it could have pulled back from Spectacles.

Evan Spiegel, the company's chief executive, has described it as an "experiment"; the company loses money on each pair it sells, according to its IPO filing.

So rolling Spectacles out across Europe is certainly interesting.

There are a couple of things at play.

First, Spectacles encourage you to use Snapchat a lot more.

I've only played with them for a day but (encouraged by the London sun) I've taken way more snaps than usual.

They're actually quite fun and the camera quality is decent.

It's also a lot easier to just hit a button on the side of your glasses to record a video, rather than get your phone out, decide which photo-sharing app you want to use and take a pic.

And that's an important point: Spectacles encourage you to use Snapchat and nothing else.

They are a way of locking in users.

Second, they play to the strengths of Snapchat, which has always been a fun, conversational medium - not one for polished photography.

Image: Spectacles will be available online and in location-hopping vending machines, including at the London Eye

As Spiegel has said: "Pictures are being used for talking.

"So when you see your children taking a zillion photos of things that you would never take a picture of, it's because they're using photographs to talk."

    That said, Spectacles cost £129.99.

They aren't aimed at teens - anyway, Snap already has that market cornered.

Spectacles are about broadening its appeal to an older, more affluent demographic.

And that price will come down over time.

But remember, Spectacles are mainly an experiment.

After the valiant disaster that was Google Glass, augmented reality is making a slow comeback.

Spectacles are lower tech than Google Glass, but people might actually wear them.

After that, Snap can start adding more and more features - and gain a beachhead in the Great Camera War.

The touchscreen camera interface gets an upgrade with Halide, a new iOS app

    Why it matters to you

iPhone users that miss the quick physical controls of an actual camera can get a little bit closer to the real thing with this gesture-based control scheme.

Features like 3D touch and gesture control have changed how smartphones operate, but despite the changes, native camera controls have remained largely static. That's what Halide, a new premium iOS photography app launched on May 30, hopes to change by bringing gesture controls and advanced settings to the iPhone.

While the App Store includes dozens of photography apps with manual controls, Halide aims to enhance the experience with a user interface that feels more reminiscent of physical camera controls, developers Ben Sandofsky, former Twitter tech lead, and Sebastiaan de With, an ex-Apple designer and photographer, said. The project came after Sandofsky and de With saw that while the quality of smartphone cameras continued to improve, the interface remained largely unchanged.

"Nothing matched the pleasure of using a well-built camera," said De With. "Halide aims to fix that."

The app's gesture-based interface uses customizable gesture controls, allowing users to use gestures instead of only single taps to control aspects like exposure and focus. When reviewing photos, images can quickly be deleted or flagged as a favorite with a swipe.

While the developers say Halide is designed around a gesture-based interface, the app includes a long list of advanced features as well. The app switches between an intelligent auto mode and manual controls in a tap. Manual focus is included, too, with a focus-peaking feature that highlights whatever is in focus in red, simplifying the task of focusing manually with an iPhone.

The app captures RAW or JPEG files, while users can check the shot with a histogram, grid overlay and built-in level. The app focuses on still photos, with no video or Live Photo options.

Sandofsky, who previously worked with Periscope's video stack, and de With, a part-time travel photographer, say that Halide's control system becomes like "muscle memory" with easy access without hunting through menus for all the features.

During launch week, Halide is available as a $3 download from the App Store, moving up to $5 on June 6. The app is compatible with iOS 10 and later. The histogram, focus peaking and RAW shooting features require an iPhone 6S or later.
