The default system Camera app received a number of user interface changes in the latest developer preview of Android O that was released on Thursday, with the mobile tool now boasting a new toggle for quickly switching between shooting modes, as well as some design tweaks. The digital toggle introduced with the Camera 4.4 build is meant to serve as an alternative method of switching between Photo and Video modes of the app, as users are still able to simply swipe the main interface to jump between the two. The toggle button flanks the main Shutter one and will be situated to its right if you're about to shoot portrait video or left if you have switched to the portrait Photo mode, i.e. up and down if you're holding the device horizontally. The toggle can either be pressed or swiped in order to switch between the two modes and seemingly doesn't have any other features, though the Mountain View, California-based tech giant may opt to expand on its functionalities in the future.
The Shutter button itself was also redesigned with the new Camera update as its gray circle is now larger, leaving less of its white edges visible. The end result of this design change is only barely obvious and it's currently unclear why Google even decided to implement it in the first place. Finally, the camera toggle button that allows users to switch between the main and selfie camera setup of their device has been redesigned in a somewhat more noticeable manner, with its camera icon now being replaced by a simple circle. This particular change results in a more visually consistent user interface of the app, though some users may find that the new icon isn't as telling as the old one whose design was more straightforward and directly indicative of its functionality. As the new tweaks and additions to Camera have been introduced in the form of a client-side update to the app, it's possible that the latest version of the mobile tool also ships with some performance improvements. Apart from this and some other changes, the Android O Developer Preview 3 debuted finalized APIs that allow developers to get their apps ready for the upcoming stable release of Android 8.0.
