(LEAD) LG Electronics showcases 6-inch V30 with top-notch camera, audio

(ATTN: ADDS details throughout, photo)

By Kang Yoon-seung

SEOUL, Aug. 31 (Yonhap) -- LG Electronics Inc. on Thursday showcased the much-awaited LG V30 smartphone in Germany ahead of the official kick off the Internationale Funkausstellung, featuring the V series' first organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display and top-notch camera features.

Compared to the previous V smartphones, the tech giant focused on enhancing the visual and audio-related features over testing new platforms or services.

"The LG V30 is a premium smartphone which embraced the industry's leading features including the F1.6 Crystal Clear Lens camera with Cine Video mode within the minimalist design," said Cho Jun-ho, who heads LG's mobile business.

"Any user can easily utilize professional-level features, and record everyday lives that will seem like a movie," Cho added.

One of the most significant developments of the LG V30 is the dual-lens rear camera with one of the lenses adopting an aperture of F1.6. This represents the fastest lens set up among the flagship smartphones currently being sold in the market.

A lower f-stop number means the camera is capable of gathering more light, leading to improved low light capabilities, as well as the ability to blur out the background.

LG Electronics added the rear camera also adopted the Crystal Clear Lens for the first time in the industry, claiming the lens permits users to capture more details compared to other plastic-based lenses.

The resolution for the back-facing wide-angle and general camera stands at 13-megapixel and 16-megapixel, respectively. The camera also supports Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) and Optical Image Stabilization (OIS). The front lens has a 5-megapixel resolution.

The 120-degree field of view offered by the wide-angle camera will also help users take clearer photos without distortion even towards the corners.

LG said the Cine Video mode also helps people to shoot quality video, with users having the option to adjust the effects and zoom at a professional level.

"While typical cameras only allow one to zoom in on the center of the frame, Point Zoom allows users to zoom in on any subject smoothly using the slider, regardless of its position in the frame, another industry first," the company said.

"Cine Effect provides a palette of 15 presets to give videos a unique movie-like look, from romantic comedy, summer blockbuster, mystery, thriller and classic movie, among others," it added.

The LG V30 also boasts improved sound-related features, helping users to optimize their sound simply by touching displays and adjusting tone depending on genre. Through the Sound Preset, users can optimize tone into four categories, namely balanced, clear, live and low-pitched. The Digital Filter also allows users to choose echo in three categories: short, slow and sharp, it added.

LG Electronics said the V30 will become the first smartphone to support the Master Quality Authenticated format, a technology for high-quality streaming. The device will also come with an earphone designed by B&O Play.

The LG V30 also reduced the bezel by 20 percent and 50 percent, each, at top and bottom, providing users with a wider screen. The display ratio stands at 18:9. The OLED Full Vision display will help users to enjoy better virtual reality content, it added.

The device is also the first to adopt the Korean-language edition of Google Assistant. The predecessor, V20, was only equipped with the English version.

For South Korean users, the device is equipped with the mobile payment system LG Pay, which connects to all local credit cards.

In addition to the myriad of updates, the V30 features "Always-on Display", which provides users with "shortcuts" to key apps without having to turn on the display. LG added the device's "Floating Bar" can also be customized with up to five most-used apps.

The tech company said its latest flagship will come in two versions with storage capacity of 64GB and 128GB, respectively. The battery capacity stands at 3,300 mAh.

As with the V20, the new device also earned the "MIL-STD 801G" certificate issued by Maryland Electrical Testing, by meeting tough security requirements approved by the U.S. Department of Defense.

The LG V30 is rated at IP68, making it both water and dust resistance.

The release of the LG V30 is significant for the company as its mobile business has been posting operating losses for nine consecutive quarters as of the April-June period.

The device is expected to reach the market on Sept. 21, along with Samsung Electronics Co.'s Galaxy Note 8. LG's bigger rival Samsung Electronics showcased the 6.3-inch Galaxy Note 8 last week.

The 6.3-inch Samsung phablet, equipped with a pen, also boasts a dual camera with 12-megapixel, with that of the front-facing lens standing at 8 megapixel. Its battery capacity is 3,300 mAh, the same as the V30.

How Apple plans to change the way you use the next iPhone

Apple Inc. plans to transform the way people use its next high-end iPhone by eliminating the concept of a home button and making other adjustments to a flagship device that's becoming almost all screen, according to images of the new device viewed by Bloomberg News and people familiar with the gadget.

The home button is the key to the iPhone and the design hasn't changed much since it launched in 2007. Currently, users click it to return to the starting app grid that greets them multiple times a day. They hold it down to talk to the Siri digital assistant. Double click it and you get multitasking where different apps screens can be swiped through like a carousel.

Apple is preparing three new iPhones for debut next month. One of the models, a new high-end device, packs in enough changes to make it one of the biggest iPhone updates in the product's decade-long history. With a crisper screen that takes up nearly the entire front, Apple has tested the complete removal of the home button-even a digital one-in favor of new gesture controls for tasks like going to the main app grid and opening multitasking, according to the people and the images.

In the new, high-end iPhone, Apple also plans a taller screen with rounded corners, a cutout at the top of the display for the camera and sensors, and new antenna locations, the images show. Apple often tests different designs and the details may differ from what the company ultimately releases. An Apple spokeswoman declined to comment.

Across the bottom of the screen there's a thin, software bar in lieu of the home button. A user can drag it up to the middle of the screen to open the phone. When inside an app, a similar gesture starts multitasking. From here, users can continue to flick upwards to close the app and go back to the home screen. An animation in testing sucks the app back into its icon. The multitasking interface has been redesigned to appear like a series of standalone cards that can be swiped through, versus the stack of cards on current iPhones, the images show.

The new model's overall size will be similar to that of the iPhone 7, but it will include an OLED screen that is slightly larger than the one on the iPhone 7 Plus (5.5-inches), people familiar with the product have told Bloomberg News. The phone will have symmetrical, slim bezels around the entirety of the screen, meaning the area below the screen that used to house the home button and the area above the screen for the earpiece have been removed. The earpiece, facial recognition sensor, and selfie camera are instead present in a cutout, or "notch," at the top of the screen, the images show.

The new screen is rounded on the corners, while current iPhone screens have square corners. The power button on the right side of phone is longer so it is easier to press while holding the device in one hand, according to the images and the people.

The screen is also noticeably taller than the iPhone 7 Plus's screen, meaning it could show more of a web page or additional text messages, the people said. The phone will still have six vertical rows of apps, showing 24 icons on each page, excluding the dock, a grey bar at the bottom that houses commonly used apps. The dock is redesigned with a new interface similar to the one on the iPad version of iOS 11, the images show.

Apple has opted to not hide the notch area at the top of the screen, showing a definitive cutout at the top of apps with non-black backgrounds. The cutout is noticeable during app usage in the middle of the very top of the screen, where the status bar (the area that shows cellular reception, the time, and battery life) would normally be placed, according to the images. Instead, the status bar will be split into left and right sides, which some Apple employees call "ears" internally. In images of recent test devices, the left side shows the time while the area on the right side of the notch displays cellular and Wi-Fi connectivity and remaining battery life. Because of limited space, the status bar could change based on the task at hand, according to a person familiar with the testing.

The color reproduction of the OLED screen means that when the display shows black, it blends in nearly perfectly with the phone's notch and thin black edges on the front, presenting a seamless look, according to the people familiar with the product. The screen itself, however, is flat like current and past iPhones and lacks the fully curved displays of the latest Samsung phones.

Apple also plans to include a stainless steel band around the phone which the glass curves into. The steel band has small antenna cuts on the corners like past iPhones to improve reception, the images show. Apple previously used steel sides and a glass casing for the iPhone 4 and 4s before moving to a mostly metal back and sides with the iPhone 5. The iPhone 6 line and newer have had completely metal backs.

Apple also is planning two additional new iPhone models that use faster processors, but include the same screens as the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. The new devices will debut at Apple's September launch event alongside upgraded Apple TV and Apple Watch models.

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 Third Party Camera App Not Working Issue & Other Related Problems

The #Samsung #Galaxy #Note5 which was released in 2015 is one of the smartphone models that takes amazing quality photos. This device is equipped with a 16 MP f/1.9 rear camera that has OIS while its front camera uses a 5MP sensor.  This is the same setup a that used by S6 and S6 Edge. The advantage of the Note 5 though is that it has a bigger 5.7 inch display and comes with an S Pen that allows for finer controls when editing the photos. Although this is a solid phone there are instances when certain issues can occur which we will be addressing today. Note 5 Third Party Camera App Not Working

Problem: hi i have note 5 with stock MM. My stock camera app works fine but when i try any other camera app there comes a problem specially in video. video recording starts shows well…but when i play that video it shows still image …but seeking bar moves…i hear audio until the bar reaches to end and when seeking bar reaches to end the video starts with no sound. tried wiping…factory reset…cache format…nothing worked.

Solution: The problem might be caused by the old software version that your phone is running on. I recommend that the first thing that you do is to update your phone software to Android Nougat. If your phone does not update then you should consider manually flashing the updated firmware file. You can get this file from the Sammobile website. Instructions on how to flash your phone are also available in this website.

In case the issue still persists even when your phone is already running on an updated software version then the problem might be caused by the third party app itself. Try using a different camera app from the Google Play Store.

Note 5 Unfortunately Gallery Has Stopped Working Error

Problem: Hi I have a problem with opening my gallery, won't open up. I have a galaxy note 5. Ithe was working perfectly yesterday, then out of nowhere it said unfortunately, gallery has stopped. I shut it off, restarted , waited a day but still didn't let me get through. I looked up videos of how to fix it and tried them but doesn't work . Can you please help me out. Thank you

Solution: The first thing that you should do in this particular case is to clear the cache and data of the gallery app from the application manager. This will usually fix the problem. If it doesn't then you need to proceed with the troubleshooting steps listed below.

  • Start the phone in Safe Mode then check if the issue still occurs in this mode. If it doesn't then the problem could be caused by an app you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.
  • Try wiping the cache partition of your phone from the recovery mode.
  • Backup your phone data then do a factory reset.
  • Note 5 Camera Failed Error

Problem: It says warning camera failed. Sometimes it also says …more than one app is trying to access the camera. Camera will shut down. I tried all of the methods you had on your page and it still doesn't work.

Solution: Troubleshooting this problem is just like troubleshooting a gallery has stopped issue which we have addressed above. The first thing that you will need to do is to check if a glitch in the camera app is causing the problem by clearing the cache and data of the camera app from the application manager. If this does not fix the problem then proceed with the troubleshooting steps listed below.

  • Start the phone in Safe Mode. When the phone operates in this mode only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run. Check if the issue still occurs in this mode. If it doesn't then it could be caused by an app you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.
  • Wipe the cache partition of your phone from the recovery mode.
  • Backup your phone data then do a factory reset.
  • Note 5 Camera Is Blurry After Installing Screen Protector

Problem: So I recently put a screen protector on my phone and I the screen doesn't respond to my finger but my s pen does.. Also my camera got blurry which I think is due to the fact that I used Windex to install my screen protector

Solution: If there is no hole where the camera lens is located in the screen protector and the screen protector is not clear or is not applied properly on the phone then it's very likely that you will get blurry photos. The fact that the display does not respond to your finger after placing the screen protector means that it has not been applied properly. I recommend that you remove this screen protector then just get a new one. Make sure that you properly install it this time.

Note 5 Camera Stopped Working After Software Update

Problem: Hello, After the last update my camera stopped working i did all the trouble shooting provided so far, clear cache tried other apps tapped around camera force stopped even factory reset and hard reset issue still persist camera isn't working I have a note 5 from verizon nv920v 64 gb

Solution: If a factory reset does not fix this problem then this is most likely a hardware related issue already possibly caused by a faulty camera module. The best thing that you should do right now is to bring the phone to a service center and have it checked.

Note 5 Restarts When Using Camera

Problem: Hi, I just bought Samsung Note 5 from my friend. I am facing issue of automatic restart when I try to take photo. First Photo which I take it turns out to be completely green color just like green paper photo, and next second it automatically restarts. This problem is quite random thrice a day.  P.S> I have tried by Hard factory reset and wiping out cache from boot menu. But problem persists. Is this hardware issue??? Please help me out. Thank you.

Solution: It's very likely that the problem is caused by a faulty battery or some internal component that is failing to work whenever the camera is being used. The best thing that you can do right now is to bring the phone to a service center and have it checked.

Note 5 Camera Settings Can't Be Accessed After Software Update

Problem: After installing update of samsung note 5, i got issue with camera setting. when I touch camera setting wheel , it appears & disapear within no time. Means it do not stay at screen.

Solution: Try restarting your phone then check if the issue still occur as sometimes a restart is usually what is needed to fix this problem. In case the issue still occurs then perform the following steps listed below. After performing a step check if the issue still occurs and if it does then perform the next step.

  • Clear the cache and data of the camera app from the application manager.
  • Wipe the cache partition of the phone from the recovery mode.
  • Backup your phone data then do a factory reset.

Gudak Turns Your iPhone Into a Classic Disposable Camera

Children growing up today will never know the '90s struggle of dropping a fresh camera roll at the local pharmacy and waiting three days to finally receive the images fully developed.

To experience that '90s moment in the present, Korean startup Screw Bar has created an innovative new app called Gudak Cam.

Modeled after a disposable Kodak camera, the app gives you roll of 24 photos to take through a tiny viewfinder, where you'll have to wait three days for it to develop, and essentially force you to make the best possible use out of every shot — much like it was with proper disposable shooters back in the day.

Additionally, you'll have to wait 12 hours before it lets you start a new roll.

Already receiving positive reviews with entirely five-star ratings from Apple's App Store, you can download Gudak now for $0.99 USD and experience the vibe, however, it's currently unavailable for Android.

This App Transforms Your iPhone Into A Retro Disposable Camera

When it comes to taking photographs, we have become spoiled by technology. Before we all started carrying around HD cameras in the form of smartphones 24/7, most of us relied on disposable cameras for capturing life's most important moments. And they were god awful.

From tiny viewfinders to fickle film to long development times, it's hard to imagine that disposable cameras were once considered "convenient." But despite the fact that we're happy we no longer rely on them, nostalgia-obsessed millennials still enjoy using the dated cameras at parties and weddings. And now the inconvenience of disposable cameras is available on iPhone.

Gudak Cam brings all the features you love to hate about disposable cameras to the iPhone. Sure, there's the filters that add a retro touch to photos, but there's also much more than that. You must take your photos through a tiny onscreen viewfinder and you better pray you get it right, because it take three days for the pictures to "develop" and actually show up. And after using up each 24 exposure "camera," you must wait 12 hours before you get another camera.

If you yearn for the days of infuriating disposable cameras, get Gudak Cam for just 99 cents. At least it's cheaper than the real thing…

You might be able to sort-of see today’s eclipse through the Google Cardboard Camera app

As great as today's solar eclipse will be, you need special eye protection in order to properly view the it without doing moderate damage to your retina. There are a few different ways to go about this, but one way to do so — although definitely not ideal — could be with a phone, Google Cardboard, and a virtual reality camera capture app from the Play Store…

Disclaimer: Don't be stupid. Don't look directly at the eclipse without eye protection, especially not through Google Cardboard lenses directly. Don't keep your phone's lens pointed at the eclipse for long durations of time. We take no responsibility for damage that may happen to your phone.

Will it damage my phone's camera?

According to NASA, the best thing to do is to "cover the camera lens with a solar filter during the moments before (and after) totality when the sunlight is still blinding." If you have a solar filter on hand, this is certainly the safest thing to do.

However, NASA says that it should be safe for most phones:

The basic argument in favor of it being safe for the camera is that the lenses are generally very small (2 millimeters or so) and do not admit enough light. Also, cameras come equipped with UV filters that cut down on some of the visible light landing on the sensor chip. Finally, they automatically set their exposures for very shorttimes.

NASA does say, though, that the biggest concern is with phones with larger lenses are the main concern, and that includes a lot of the latest Android phones like the LG G6 and the Galaxy S8. But most photographers agree that briefly pointing your camera at the eclipse won't be a problem:

The argument for it not being safe is that some of the more recent smartphones use larger and faster lenses (f/1.7 to f/2.0) to get better resolution, and that can be a problem.

Apple also told The Wall Street Journal that an iPhone won't be damaged by photographing the eclipse (the iPhone 7 has an f/1.8 aperture):

Although Apple says photographing the eclipse won't damage the iPhone's camera, you'll get a better shot by holding a pair of eclipse glasses directly in front of the lens as you snap the shutter.

So with the above in mind, you'll only want to point your phone at the eclipse briefly and not for an extended amount of time. It's also worth noting that the wide angle lenses of smartphones likely aren't going to be able to see or capture the eclipse in much detail, so unless you have a telephoto lens or some other special equipment, it might not even be worth your time at all.

With that in mind, keep reading if you want to give it a shot.

Using Google Cardboard and a VR camera app

If you want to skip the many livestream options and see the eclipse for yourself, Google's inexpensive VR headset in conjunction with an unofficial app like the FullDive Virtual Reality Camera might just work.

To view the eclipse in this manner, install the Cardboard Camera app if you don't already have it, put your phone into your Cardboard headset, and then open up the application. From here, you'll be able to safely view the eclipse through Cardboard — although it might not give you a much clearer image than by just projecting the sun onto a piece of paper.

As mentioned above, though, it's worth noting that you should only take small glances at the sun rather than hold your phone and cardboard up to it for long periods of time. The harsh rays of the sun could potentially cause damage to your device's camera lens if pointed at it too long. The likelihood of this is pretty slim, but just be sure to play it smart and take your glimpses through Cardboard in quick doses.

The exact time for when to view today's solar eclipse will depend on where you live, and while your absolute best bet for watching it still lies with official solar eclipse glasses, Google Cardboard offers a couple nice alternatives for folks (like me) that missed out on picking up a pair before they sold out pretty much everywhere.

Have fun, stay safe, and happy eclipse day!

Stephen Hall contributed to this post.

How to Use the Secret iPhone Camera Level Tool in iOS 11

Posted by Khamosh Pathak on Aug 23, 2017 | No Comments iOS 11 Secret iPhone Camera Level TooliOS 11 Secret iPhone Camera Level Tool

iOS 11 is filled with new technologies that take the camera to a whole new level. There's the entire new ARKit framework, the new VR mode in Maps and now it seems like the AI smarts are secretly seeping into the Camera app as well. iOS 11 has an impressive hidden level tool that's hidden in settings. Here's how to enable it.

The feature is integrated into the Grid feature. So first, we'll need to enable it from Settings. As the name suggests, the feature lets you figure out if your subject is perfectly leveled against the background (like the ground or the ceiling). This will help you take symmetrical and perfectly centered photos.

How to Enable Camera Level Tool

Step 1: Open the Settings app from the Home screen.

Step 2: Scroll to the bottom of the list. Just before you see the list of apps, select the Camera option.

Step 1: Open the Camera app and you'll now see a 9 box grid overlaid on the camera. This feature can itself help you take better photos. Refer to the rule of thirds in photography.

Step 2: In the middle of the screen, notice the two white crosshairs smack in the middle of the screen. They look like a thin plus (+) icon.

Step 3: Move the camera to align these two plus icons. Once they are right on top of each other, they'll transform into one bold plus icon and it will turn yellow. This is your cue to take the photo. When it turns yellow, it means that the photo is perfectly parallel with the ground.

Google Camera App enhanced to Bring HDR+ Feature

The camera app of Google Pixel has received positive views after the release. The power of this app is good enough to give satisfactory results most of the time. It is the main reason that this gadget got a good response from the users as well as market experts. The main reason for the success of the camera is capabilities of the software utilized by Pixel. It shows influential characteristics to impress the users. Therefore most of the users prefer using it. There are some related developments in this segment and it is important to inform you about it.

A developer from Ukraine whose official name is B-S-G has worked a little more in this field and he brought some results. These results are such that those people who criticize Google Camera app may not get a chance to discuss those limitations. The inclusion of HDR+ feature is making this modification unique. Now the gadget with either Snapdragon 820 or 821 or 835 processor can give better results. Adam Conway is the name of the developer who says that some premium gadgets like Samsung Galaxy S8, LG G6 and a few OnePlus models are giving the right kinds of outcomes with the modified app. The new HDR+ technology by Google is undoubtedly looking great for these devices.

There are many devices which are working with the modified app. However, it is important to check the images as the different gadgets are giving different types of images. The overall development is supportive for the premium models and the device can give you images with more clarity. Specialists were trying to check the safety of the modified app and they found that some references were made to "muskie" and "Google Pixel 2". There are chances that it is a trick to show that the program is working on the unreleased gadget of Pixel. Here we would like to inform you that "Muskie" was considered as a codename for the third edition of Pixel smartphone. However, later on, it was cancelled due to some reasons.

The stable edition of this app may take a little more time. The newest update to Google Camera app brought the selfie flash feature. The edition v4.4 has the new characteristics. Some additional improvements are required to bring the kind of updates which the users can check without any difficulty. The complete support is expected to be available for different devices as there are no plans to include the support for a specific model. Therefore it is better to first check the images and take the decision accordingly.

Review Roundup: Essential Phone has fast software, excellent hardware, but low-light camera performance as bad as the app icon

After finally going on sale yesterday, the first reviews have dropped on the first phone from Andy Rubin's startup, the Essential Phone. The bezel-less device indeed suffered delays (and weathered hype for other devices), but the remaining question is the tried-and-true: Is it actually worth buying? We'll answer that ourselves soon, but in the meantime, here's what others are saying…

One thing that runs through every review of the Essential Phone, of course, are notes on its unique display and hardware, both of which are major factors on the phone. While it's a little heavy, the Phone is easy to grip thanks to the sharp titanium edges, Wired:

You learn a lot about the Essential Phone merely by picking it up. This sharp-edged, slippery slab of titanium and ceramic conveys power, all tool and no toy. It has no camera bumps, no branding…

…I love how this phone feels. I wish it were a little lighter in my pocket, and not quite so slippery or prone to fingerprints. It's also not as tough as it looks. Yes, that titanium body won't ding or scratch the way aluminum or plastic do. In a show of confidence of the phone's strength, the company doesn't offer a case. Still, it won't quantify the phone's ruggedness, because if you drop it, you might just break it.

That physical toughness is a nice thing to see in a bezel-less phone, as competitors like Samsung can't quite make the same claims. The display itself is also solid despite using LCD technology rather than the more prevalent (and preferred) AMOLED. Best of all, that cutout for the front-facing camera doesn't get in the way, The Verge:

That cyclops eye seems like the sort of thing that would be distracting, but in my experience it becomes invisible almost immediately. Ninety-five percent of the time Android doesn't put anything of value in that particular part of the screen anyway, and the phone is adept at keeping apps that go truly full screen (like video) letterboxed in.

The screen itself is LCD instead of OLED. The engineers at Essential tell me that finding a supplier who could do the cutout when development started 18 months ago limited their options. As a display, it's great. It has wide viewing angles, is totally viewable in sunlight, and of course it has approximately two kajillion pixels like all modern smartphones.

Another important aspect of the Essential Phone's hardware comes down to its modularity. Through two pins that give power to modules and wireless USB, the phone's interpretation of modules is one of the best we've seen yet. It's easily comparable to Motorola's system, both of which have their pros and cons. Right now the only available accessory is a 360-degree camera, but the promise is certainly there, The Verge:

Compared to Motorola's competing modular system, Essential's setup has one fairly big flaw: you can't just attach a module and stick the whole thing in your pocket like you can with a Moto Z. But there are a few advantages. It doesn't constrain future phone designs, for example. A future phone could stick the module bits in another spot without breaking compatibility.

The phone's software is Android, as you'd expect from Andy Rubin, and it's a very clean version at that. The pre-loaded Android 7.1.1 is fast and clean, with nothing added outside of a custom camera app and the bits needs for the status bar and modules. As you'd expect with any new phone, though, there are some minor issues, VentureBeat:

The PH-1's software doesn't provide much in the way of surprises, which is a good thing. The Essential team made the smart decision to use stock Android Nougat (version 7.1.1 in the device I tested), rather than trying to add its own wrapper around the operating system. The software user experience felt clean, though the phone was weirdly unresponsive in certain scenarios, like trying to scroll a long YouTube video.

The Verge also points out that Rubin intends to keep updates fast on this phone, a huge plus indeed.

Rubin has said that he expects to provide software updates for two years for the Essential Phone and security updates for another year after that. He tells me that the desire to push out updates quickly is one of the reasons Essential didn't do too much tweaking to the software.

As for the phone's dual-camera system, it's a bit of a mixed bag. The dual-13MP sensors take an approach similar to that of Motorola and Huawei in taking a color shot and a monochrome shot and combining them to enhance the final shot, PCMag:

In good lighting conditions, the Essential takes photos that might even rival the Galaxy S8, our favorite camera phone. Its dynamic range is better, delivering truer shadow areas while not stinting on brighter parts of the picture… But something software-wise is still wrong with low-light performance. It's much worse than I expect from an f/1.8 camera…

The camera app itself is very minimal as well, Engadget:

For better or worse, shooting with the Essential is dead-simple. I say that because there are a grand total of four shooting modes in the custom camera app, including Auto, monochrome and the option to shoot a slow-motion video clip. (Don't worry, you can also shoot normal video at up to 4K.) Meanwhile, a trip to the settings reveals only two options: one to toggle the shutter sound and one to store location data in a photo. I appreciate the simplicity, but a little extra control would have been nice.

Shortly before reviews hit the web, Essential pushed out a last minute update to help fix the camera's issues. Where the low light was previously poor, it's now at least a little better, The Verge:

…a mere eight or so hours before we needed to publish this review, I got a software update for the camera that added a manual HDR mode. More importantly, the update improved image quality — in some cases drastically. What was yellow and flat before became punchier and more contrasty. Where before I would have described the low light performance as "a dumpster fire but worse because you can at least see fire in the dark," now it's approaching something like respectability.

Let's also not forget the terrible app icon that comes with that custom camera app.

Overall, the consensus on the Essential Phone has been this: It's a solid offering in more ways than one, but there are some inherent flaws with it as well, the camera being one of the biggest flaws. A lot of this can be fixed through software, and the company has already shown that it is capable of doing so, but so far, it just seems like it was pushed out just a little too soon. Essential is trying hard to make a splash in the Android market, but I think Wired sums up the situation perfectly:

You'll also realize that Essential, like everyone else, is still working out how to truly change the smartphone game.

Google Pixel’s Camera App with HDR+ Ported to Other Snapdragon 820/821 and 835 Devices

Google Pixel XL - camera sensors and lens, flush

Google Pixel XL - camera sensors and lens, flush

The secret to Google Pixel's amazing camera performance is Google's HDR+ and computational photography tricks which help the phone capture some amazing photos. While OEMs like Samsung and HTC have tried implementing their own taken on HDR+, their efforts have not been as successful as that of Google.

Now, a Ukrainian developer B-S-G has managed to port Google's Camera app with HDR+ to all Snapdragon 820/821 and Snapdragon 835 powered devices which feature Hexagon 680 or higher ISP. This includes the likes of OnePlus 5, OnePlus 3/3T, LG G6, Galaxy S8 (US variant), and more.

The modded APK of the app can be installed on any non-rooted device just like you would sideload any other APK. The modded APK essentially forces the Google Camera app to think that it is running on the Pixel 2 which is why it automatically turns the HDR+ mode on. Like with on any Pixel device, when you click a pic with the modded camera APK on your device, you will get a familiar HDR processing notification in the background.

So, how much of a difference does the HDR+ make on devices like the OnePlus 3? Quite a lot. Right away, you will notice that HDR+ photos taken from the modded Google Camera app have less noise, more details, and better dynamic range.

It is possible that the modded Google Camera app will end up crashing on your device once in a while. This is still the first beta of the app though and the developer will likely work on fixing such kinks in future releases.

You can download the modded Google Camera APK for your Snapdragon 820/821 or Snapdragon 835 device from here.

'Hamilton' Launches Mobile App With Stickers, Camera Filters and Ticket Lottery

There's a million things Hamilton hasn't done, including launching its own mobile app ... until now.

The hit Broadway musical has debuted a new free app stacked with stickers, emojis, camera filters, music, news and exclusive content with creator Lin-Manuel Miranda and the Hamilton companies. It also allows fans to buy exclusive show merchandise and enter its $10 ticket lottery in Los Angeles (New York and Chicago lotteries will be offered on the app on Aug. 22 and 29, respectively). It is available for all iOS and Android phones.

Soon, the app will include exclusive ticket access, augmented reality, an enhanced #EduHam experience and interactive karaoke tracks. It will also feature L.A.'s first live #Ham4Ham performance, hosted by Miranda who teased the offbeat song-and-dance tradition in a video (included below).

"We are constantly exploring ways to allow more people to experience Hamilton in its many forms," says producer Jeffrey Seller. "This mobile app is designed to do just that — provide exciting new ways for fans to interact with and gain access to the musical they love."

"With the rollout of the HamApp, we are setting the stage, but it's just the opening number," adds Miranda. "There is a lot more to this app that's on the way, and I'm very excited to share it all with our fans in the coming months. Get ready for what's next!"

The app's stickers and emojis feature fan art and show lyrics, and will be continually upgraded with new offerings. The #HamCam has filters that transform fans into the show's various characters and puts them on a ten-dollar bill. The music section lets fans download or stream the original cast recording and the Hamilton Mixtape. It also offers alerts of productions' newly available ticket blocks and houses content written by the cast and creative team.

The production debuted the new app on Friday, the same day it begins its Los Angeles run. Officially opening Aug. 16, Hamilton will play at the Pantages Theatre through Dec. 30. Michael Luwoye, Joshua Henry, Rory O'Malley, Solea Pfeiffer, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Amber Iman, Jordan Donica, Rubén J. Carbajal, Mathenee Treco star in the production, directed by Tommy Kail.

App works great then you realise a monthly subscription to cover a few cameras for 7 days is stupid money per month. Give us the option to store locally and retrieve remotely and charge us for the app. I would pay £10. Will uninstal as little use without subscription to me.

iOS 11 to bring pause and resume video recording capability to Camera app

Despite being one of the best-operating systems available for smartphones, iOS on iPhone and iPad still lacks some common features. Pause and Resume capability while recording a video is one such feature. The iPhone and iPad users still cannot pause and resume while shooting a video. However, an iOS developer who goes by the name Daniel Niyazov notes that Apple may address this glaring omission in coming weeks.

    Galaxy S8 Camera

    Galaxy S8 Camera

Last week, Daniel Niyazov tweeted a screenshot of a snippet of code showing Pause and Resume capabilities available in Apple's camera framework. It remains unclear whether the feature is related to an unreleased hardware (iPhone 8?) or if the older iPhone models also support it.

previously, the same developer revealed that his analysis of the HomePod firmware shows that Apple could use 3D facial scanning to authenticate Apple Pay transactions. While he also found references of iPhone 8's front-facing camera capable of capturing 4K videos at 60fprs, the developer has advised to not count on that because it's highly unlikely.

It's annoying to not have the ability of pause a video during shooting and resume it with a tap. With the Pause and Resume feature of the Camera app, users will be able to create one continuous video with many different scenes without any need to capture them separately and then joining them with the help of a video editing app.

This is one of the basic feature available on any camcorder out there in the wild and a must-have feature for any iPhone photography fan. The lack of support in Apple's flagship smartphone is not less than a surprise.

While Apple has not provided Pause and Resume feature in its software, the hardware does have this capability as evident from some of the camera apps available in the App Store. VideoCam+ can pause and resume video shooting and a jailbreak tweak called RecordPause also adds the Pause and Resume capability to the stock Camera app.

Nokia 8: is this the camera app?

By Hadlee Simons on 7 August, 2017

The Nokia 8 hasn't seen the light of day yet, but we've already seen a steady stream of leaks over the past two months or so. Now, the latest report claims to show screenshots of the camera app.

According to IT Home, the Nokia 8 camera UI seemingly confirms the dual-camera arrangement. In fact, one screenshot shows toggles for "RGB", "mono" and "dual lens" camera options, complete with corresponding icons.

It's not quite clear why HMD is apparently offering RGB and dual lens options. Huawei's pioneering camera arrangement on the P9 didn't offer access to the RGB camera only, as colour photos were produced by combining the monochrome and RGB data from both cameras.

    Nokia 8,

If confirmed, the camera app would arguably be less intuitive than the Lumia Camera app. Nokia's UI, which has since been aped by the likes of LG, has a series of sliders to quickly adjust camera settings.

There's some hope for the Nokia 8 in the camera department though, as recent reports claim HMD has acquired 500 patents, including one for the Lumia Camera UI, from Microsoft.

The new phone is also tipped to carry the Carl Zeiss branding as part of an arrangement between HMD and the optical firm.

Rimmel London debuts AR makeup tool for Facebook's in-app camera

    Brief

    Brief:
  • Coty's Rimmel London cosmetics brand debuted a series of virtual try-on effects within Facebook's in-app camera and Stories feature, according to a press release made available to Mobile Marketer. The augmented reality (AR) features let users virtually sample several of the brand's eyeliner looks in the app and post them directly to the social network.
  • The feature builds upon the brand's private AR app "Get the Look," which rolled out in March. Rimmel brought the feature to Facebook because 55% of users said the social network is their primary source of beauty inspiration, according to a survey by GfK.
  • Rimmel worked with Holition, a U.K.-based agency to develop the Facebook camera effects, which are available in the U.S., U.K. and Middle East on iOS and Android.
  • Insight:

Rimmel is among the several makeup brands that have embraced AR technology to give consumers another way to test out new looks via mobile. Much of the activity to date has been on platforms like YouCam, Modiface and Meitu. With Facebook getting into the game, this could give the other startup platforms more competition than they can handle, although Facebook is reportedly leveraging Meitu's technology. Facebook's significantly larger user base, many of whom are already engaged in sharing beauty advice on the platform, and broad array of marketing services could make it an attractive choice for these brands.

AR is taking off among beauty brands that see the potential in unique mobile features, especially with younger consumers who like to share their makeup and clothing styles on social media. Rimmel started in the AR space with its "Get the Look" app that lets users snap and virtually "steal" any look from the streets, social media and magazines. Estée Lauder last month debuted a chatbot on Facebook Messenger to help customers get their product questions answered.

Brands are still sorting through how best to present themselves to users on digital and drive sales or foot traffic to stores. The drive online is partially due to the sweeping success of Sephora, which lets people sample a wide range of products before buying, oftentimes using digital tools and face scans to match skin tones to products. It's not a stretch to expect that most fashion and cosmetics brands will eventually incorporate some sort of AR into their mobile capabilities to help consumers browse online.
